Philanthropy has a role to play in #BuildingTogether. Many Council members are stepping in to support local efforts and promote civil discourse to bridge cultural and ideological divides. Richard Harwood, president of The Harwood Institute believes the solution lies in finding common ground, "What we need is a civic path forward, where people come together in their local communities, figure out what they can agree on, and get working together." A super useful initial #guidebook to #donor-#community relationship following a horrific catastrophe (in thjs case- #october7massacre ). I believe that Ariel Dloomy's insights can apply to many other circumstances. As a former kibbutznik myself, I would add to this list that I think the past four months have reshaped the interactions between kibbutzim and #philanthropists. It is a remarkable example of two parallel lines which have hardly met in the past 75 years, but were forced to come together in a time of need. The lesson for other communities and organizations is to look around and map those other stakeholders which are not currently on your #radar; and then start building relationships and channels of #communication. It may prove critical when the next #crisis or #disaster hits- either you, them or both.
My op-ed on eJP where I share some professional and personal insights since Oct. 7. Engaging in philanthropy within the Gaza envelope communities, where I grew up.

Check out this insightful essay by Samra Ghermay, Associate Director at Wingo NYC Fundraising Studio. In her piece, Samra explores the profound connection between African proverbs and collaborative philanthropy. African proverbs, steeped in themes of unity and cooperation, have been silent architects of community and partnership. Samra urges us to move beyond clichés, emphasizing the wisdom: "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." The essay delves into the historical context of collaborative philanthropy, a lifeline in liberation struggles against colonial rule. However, Samra raises concern about its co-opting into institutional settings, sidelining communities it aims to serve. Let's reclaim the essence of collaborative philanthropy, honoring its authentic, intentional, and consensus-driven nature. Reflecting on African communal practices during Black History Month, let's build a future where true partnership, empathy, and collective action drive lasting societal change. #CollaborativePhilanthropy #CommunityBuilding #BlackHistoryMonth #FundraisingForChange https://lnkd.in/eJvaiUy7
Collaborative philanthropy is rooted in African communal practice. Let’s reclaim it.

Please take a look at this program on which I am fortunate to be able to collaborate with Gathering Ground. Through the lens of Paulo Freire, we are going to look at what's often called the "Non Profit Industrial Complex" and ways it mimics or expresses colonial & neocolonial practices and try to think together about what we can do to disrupt our participation. #antiracism #equity #colonialism #neocolonialism #newjersey #nonprofits #blacklinkedin "The Elevating Equity Anti-Oppression Collaborative Learning Program brings together a cohort of 100 people from the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors to identify oppression within the social sector and design actions that dismantle systems, build resistance, and advance a shared commitment to equity. In a series of six sequential workshops, attendees bring their own personal backgrounds and professional expertise that span race, class, gender, and experiences to dig into anti-oppression work together. Rooted in Paulo Freire’s “Pedagogy of the Oppressed” the program supports people who are increasingly concerned about colonialism in the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors.? The cohort-learning setting, allows for examining individual roles and organizations through an anti-oppressive framework – opening the awareness to develop strategies for making real and lasting change." https://lnkd.in/euiigYMR

Today, as we celebrate MLK Jr. Day, we’re reminded of something Dr. King said: “Philanthropy is commendable, but it must not cause the philanthropist to overlook the circumstances of economic injustice which make philanthropy necessary.” These words resonate deeply with our mission at CoSpero Consulting. While we acknowledge and appreciate the role of philanthropy in driving positive change, we also recognize the importance of addressing the root causes of inequality and injustice. Our work is dedicated to creating human-centered, transformative solutions that address immediate needs and shift institutional practices to liberate communities to overcome systemic barriers to economic equity. Today, let’s celebrate Dr. King’s vision by committing to not only be agents of change through philanthropy but also advocates for justice and equity in all aspects of our society. Let’s work together to create a world where philanthropy is a choice, not a necessity.#MLKDay #SocialImpact #EconomicJustice #ChangeMakers

Building the new order must also includes adopting innovative approaches and less replication of traditional engagements.
“Philanthropy must adopt a more disruptive role, moving out from under the tumbling pillars and walls of the old order and helping lay the foundations of a new, better one,” writes Open Society President Mark Malloch-Brown.

Appreciation to Hanh Le and Temi F. Bennett, Esq. for their commitment to reckon with where the wealth of their foundation comes from, and for their continued leadership to do so when met with resistance. As someone whose familial and community history includes Japanese American Redress, I also want to affirm the potential for transformation through these processes. When reparations addresses and transforms the legacies of colonialism and racial capitalism through relational repair (i.e., acknowledgement, apology, accountability and amends), recenters the vision and leadership of those harmed, the possibility and potential exists to reorganize current systems by changing who controls and stewards wealth, and decides how it circulates and to what ends. When we think about a #JustTransition for #philanthropy, this is one way to get there. https://lnkd.in/g7DdeK_C
