Today marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, a pivotal moment in history that showcased unparalleled leadership and bravery. On June 6, 1944, leaders at all levels faced immense pressure and uncertainty but demonstrated decisive action, strategic planning, and unwavering commitment. D-Day teaches us that effective leadership is about making tough decisions, inspiring and rallying teams, and adapting to unforeseen challenges. As Colonel Paul R. Goode said in a pre-attack briefing to the 175th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division, "You get your ass on the beach. I'll be there waiting for you and I'll tell you what to do. There ain't anything in this plan that is going to go right." This quote embodies the essence of leadership—not always having all the answers but charging headfirst into uncertainty, leading the way. True leaders rise in the face of adversity, guiding their teams with courage and resilience, ready to adapt and support their people no matter the obstacles. Today is Armed Forces Day. And, with perfect timing, the Institute of Leadership have released a report into military and productivity skills: "Battlefield to Boardroom". Its summary findings are: ?? There is a lack of comprehension from businesses (86%) regarding transitioning skills ?? There is a national skills gap, which veterans could fill if this comprehension was improved ?? This is something I’m extremely proud of. It’s taken nearly 2 years to pull together the breadth of understanding that the ???? Centre for Army Leadership has amassed since it’s conception in 2016, mapping the entire skill of leadership and translating it for the specific needs of the Army. ?? It’s been a huge team effort to get to this point, and a big thanks must go to our community of advocates and Fellows, as well as Defence and NATO partners who have been offering valuable peer review throughout its development. ??Yet it’s publication is only the start of the organisational adoption needed. There is now a long road ahead to ensure that how we train, educate, and develop our leaders is realigned to this foundational framework, together with developing the necessary support systems, such as a wide-scale coaching mentality across all ranks, that will ensure we maximise the full potential of every individual. #Leadership #LeaderDevelopment #LeadershipDevelopment

Guy Gibson: A Timeless Lesson in the Essence of True Leadership. Leadership is about more than experience—it's about vision, courage, and the ability to inspire others to achieve the extraordinary. Wing Commander Guy Gibson exemplified these traits in a way that continues to resonate today. At just 24 years old, Gibson led the legendary Dambusters raid in 1943, one of the most daring missions in military history. As the leader of 617 Squadron, he was tasked with breaching the Ruhr dams, a mission that demanded not only precise execution but also immense bravery. For his exceptional leadership, Gibson was awarded the Victoria Cross, adding to an already distinguished record with multiple Distinguished Service Orders and Distinguished Flying Crosses. Before the Dambusters, Gibson had already demonstrated remarkable leadership in Bomber Command, completing over 170 missions and contributing significantly to the Allied war effort. His ability to lead under extreme pressure, maintain morale, and achieve success in the face of overwhelming odds makes his story a timeless example of leadership. Today, we often talk about leadership in terms of innovation, empathy, and adaptability. While the world has changed, the essence of leadership remains the same. Gibson’s achievements remind us that leadership is not defined by age or experience, but by the ability to inspire, take risks, and lead others to success.
