Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! This month, we celebrate the rich traditions and diversity that Hispanic culture brings to the United States. However, sometimes these celebrations can feel a bit superficial, focusing on popular aspects like food, crafts and traditional clothing. But for many, heritage runs much deeper, and language is one of the primary anchors of cultural identity. Spanish is more than just a language; it is a living connection to our roots. Seeing labels in Spanish or reading books in our language makes us feel recognized and valued. Yet, finding good literature in Spanish remains a challenge. Publishers often focus on releasing books about the "Latino experience," but not always in Spanish. It’s important to remember that in 2019, Spanish was the most spoken language in the U.S., after English, with 62% of the population being Spanish speakers. With more than 58.9 million people speaking Spanish in this country, there are countless reasons to invest in quality Spanish-language materials and literature. The U.S. is a multicultural country, and it’s wonderful to celebrate the cultures that make it what it is. Just as we should value Spanish during Hispanic Heritage Month, we should also highlight other languages, like Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, and Thai during Asian Heritage Month, and indigenous languages during Native American Hertage Month. June is Immigrant Heritage Month! This is a time to celebrate all the ways that immigrants give to and share in our communities. At the Alliance, we are committed to cultural competence to ensure that members of diverse cultures and backgrounds can access the quality care they need. Here is how we are promoting and improving cultural competence among our staff: Staff training and education. We offer comprehensive training programs that cover various aspects of cultural competence, including workshops, seminars and online courses. Culturally diverse workforce. We strive to build a workforce that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve. Language services. Our Cultural & Linguistic Services Program provides language services, including interpretation and translation, to ensure that language barriers do not impede access to care. Together, we can continue to build a health care system that recognizes and values the rich tapestry of cultures that make up our community. #healthycommunities #managedcare #culture

The event served as a pulse check for the state of language rights and bilingual education in the U.S. over the last 50 years as a result of Lau. So how have things changed since then?"

Gaslighting the English speaking community: ‘Just shut up- you are the best treated minority ever!’ Great article by Robert Libman. The inconvenient truth is that English and French speaking people have lived peacefully and productively within the present territorial boundaries of Quebec for centuries. We have created a unique de facto bilingual society. The names on tombstones in cemeteries across Quebec offer cogent evidence of a significant and deep rooted English presence. English speaking community institutions were not the product of Francophone benevolence. Separatists and nationalists rely on a revisionist history of Quebec that steadfastly refuses to acknowledge the presence of the English speaking community in our society since its very inception. They also pretend that s.133 of the 1867 Constitution Act that guarantees the equality of the French and English languages in the Quebec National Assembly, the Parliament of Canada and our courts has somehow been repealed. History, geography and demographics ensures that the CAQ’s eradication efforts directed against the English language will fail. Furthermore, despite the support of a powerful media machine promoting a French unilingual Québec, 1.3 million English speakers are valued- by the everyday Fracophones we live and work with. And no- we will not shut up.

Did you know that in 1990, a law was passed in the United States to protect Native American languages? This law plays a crucial role in preserving these languages, which are the heart of cultural identity and heritage. Just as music helps us teach new languages to children, these native languages help keep traditions alive and allow different cultures to understand and respect one another. ???? New immigrants often use Spanish as their primary language, and even more acculturated Hispanics respond positively to Spanish-language communication. While many are bilingual, 72% of Hispanics speak both Spanish and English*, the influence of Spanish remains significant across generations. It’s a source of pride, with 85% of Hispanics emphasizing that future generations should maintain the ability to speak Spanish*. Even younger Hispanics embrace Spanglish in their everyday conversations. Spanish proficiency is not a prerequisite for connecting with their cultural heritage. Whether through TV, music, or digital platforms, 45% of Hispanics watch content tied to their cultural background more than half the time*, and 56% are more likely to keep watching when they see someone from their identity group*. 'Espa?ol' is more than a language; it’s a bridge to culture, identity, and community.
