In sights from a creative call with a client- I had a creative call with a new client and some of their "new client" questions were worth sharing, as they could be helpful to others thinking about entering into the audio advertising space. 1. appliance and audience- How will your message be heard? In car radio Streaming Podcasting Targeted Audio While the message and voice can be the same across all audio platforms, you have the unique opportunity to customize the message by channel. Radio- open arms & speak to everyone Podcasting- these people are most like listening on earbuds- talk to them with one on one language, they are usually the only person listening 2. ROI/ Call to action elements- Do you want people do something or justify your audio spend? Asking someone to give the secret word when the come in or other things similar rarely work because the reward isn't worth the work. People don't want to look cheap (like they need the discount) People know they heard your audio ad (that's why they showed up) don't embarrass them with a pop quiz of where they last heard you If these questions and concerns are for "tracking the success", I can provide much better ways to "test" things and better yet, let's provide a compelling and informational offer that will make your cash register ring, drive leads and clicks! Gather round for a cautionary audio tale of yore… In the 70s, FM radio gained popularity over AM because of its comparatively better sound and unique ads. However, as streaming audio entered the scene and terrestrial radio listening declined, more and more ads were added to FM radio to hang on to revenues. While FM held a long tenure as the cool kid on the audio block, it was eventually unseated by the next big thing. According to this new Signal Hill Insights article (link in comments), podcasts are enjoying the same bullish trends as FM radio did in the 70s. The challenge for marketers? Learning from the past and ensuring podcasts continue to adapt to listeners' evolving interests—especially when it comes to ads. Consumers will certainly continue to tolerate ads to a point, but if ads become too disruptive to their listening experience, they will go elsewhere for content. Edison Research data shows that the broader audio industry has seen a gradual shift toward subscription-based listening. In 2015, 90% of audio was ad-supported; today, it’s closer to 70%. Audio Advertising (including podcasts) Drives Significant Attention Compared to Other Ad Platforms, according to Attention Economy Study by Dentsu Media and Lumen Research Podcasts?(measured across Audacy, Cumulus Media, iHeartMedia, Spotify and SXM Media) drove the highest attentive seconds per thousand impressions compared to other digital, social and TV benchmarks. In addition, brand choice uplift was higher for host reads compared to traditional audio ads within podcasts. Radio?(measured across Audacy, Cumulus Media and iHeartMedia) also?impressively drove higher attentive seconds per thousand impressions compared to other digital, social and TV benchmarks. Radio shined as the most efficient of the audio formats studied, proving to be 10x more efficient when compared to the average online video ads measured through Dentsu’s Attention Economy.
