?? Pennsylvania becomes the latest state to criminalize non-consensual AI-generated sexual content, with Governor Shapiro signing the legislation into law on October 29th. The new law will: ? Make it a criminal offense to create or share "artificially generated sexual depictions" - content that appears to authentically depict someone in nudity or sexual conduct that never occurred in reality ?Set clear penalties: ? First-degree misdemeanor if the victim is a minor ? Second-degree misdemeanor if the victim is an adult ?Update terminology and strengthen protections against "artificially generated child sexual abuse material" It is truly no brainer that we need a federal policy on this! Last year, all 50 state attorneys general united in calling for federal action against AI-generated child sexual abuse material - a rare show of unanimity that demonstrates how serious this issue is. ?? AI generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM) is criminal in the UK and our Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) hotline is able to get this material removed from the internet by working with a large number of global partners. We're keeping this issue high on the agenda by producing regular reports to explain what we're seeing on the internet, given that we've got a near-unique ability to look in darker places online. Today's media coverage, however, demonstrates how AI-CSAM is not now 'only' in those darker areas, but is readily findable on the clear web - the web we use to do our shopping, check sports scores and get access to the news. Here's our press release, and also some coverage today in the Guardian (among many other titles which ran with this story): https://lnkd.in/eJ2TUJyR https://lnkd.in/eCxiY-87

This issue is also pervasive in the global South. Does anyone know of any Africa-based/ MENA-based organisations that are taking on CSAM both AI generated and human generated? The research shows that a significant proportion is produced by minors. I know Internet Watch Foundation is working with global partners but in my view we need more local actors to get involved.

The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) has published a news story on the increase of artificial intelligence (AI) generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM) being found on publicly accessible areas of the internet. It discusses: the prevalence of AI-generated CSAM online; the difficulty for agencies in knowing if there is a real child being harmed; and the law relating to AI-generated CSAM. https://lnkd.in/eKmywSGS

AI-generated child sexual abuse material This is extremely worrying and something that I think should be on everybody's radar. Take a look below ?? “The scale of the issue is already enormous. The Internet Watch Foundation found 275,000 webpages containing child sexual abuse content. On just one forum, 20,000 AI-generated images were posted in a single month, over 3,000 of which depicted criminal acts of child sexual abuse. This is not a hypothetical problem or some kind of dystopian imagination; it is happening right now.” ? During the Committee Stage of the Data Bill, Lord James Bethell delivered a powerful intervention in support of Amendment 203, exposing the harrowing reality of the rapid proliferation of AI-generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The amendment proposes making it an offence to train #AI models using CSAM or other illegal content to generate images. ? While the creation and distribution of AI-generated child sexual abuse material is already illegal under UK law, AI’s capabilities have far outpaced existing legislation. Disturbingly, offenders can now legally access the tools to generate such images and produce them at scale and offline, all while maintaining high levels of anonymity through open-source technology. ? As Lord Bethell stressed, this measure is not about stifling innovation but about establishing basic guardrails to prevent AI’s misuse, protect victims, and hold platforms accountable. ? ?? ??UK Government will bring forward measures to tackle AI-generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Earlier this week, Baroness Jones of Whitchurch announced the Government will address the concerns raised by Baroness Kidron's amendment 203. The amendment to the Data Bill would criminalise the mechanisms used to generate CSAM - addressing a deeply concerning loophole regarding the creation of AI-generated CSAM. We await to hear how the Home Office will deliver this change but welcome the recognition of the amendment's importance. #AI #OnlineSafety #GenAI

We, at StrawberrySocial Ltd, echo what the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) is saying. We've been 'banging on' about the lack of safeguards around new tech and AI for quite some time but people are slow to listen. Now, more than ever, it's so important to keep your online communities safe as well as engaged - especially in the not-for-profit / caring field. We've been doing this a very long time (for all main sectors) so do grab us for some help and advice. We don't do a 'big sell', we do this work because it's a core belief for us. We can help find workable solutions for you, even if it doesn't involve us! ?? The world is undergoing a boom in accessible artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. New tools and capabilities present novel opportunities for criminal and malicious actors to exploit children. As lawmakers, policymakers and law enforcement work to keep up with criminal innovations, children are growing increasingly susceptible to AI-generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM). ?? #ai #artificialintelligence #childabuse #law #policy #csam #protection #childrensrights

???AI?child sexual abuse imagery continues to rise?with no end in sight ??? ? Legislators must act now to prevent AI technology from being exploited to create child sexual abuse imagery The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) issued a stark warning that the public is at #risk of exposure to harmful, criminal material, as an increasing amount of AI-generated child sexual abuse content is identified on publicly accessible areas of the internet. In the past six months alone,?there has been a 6% increase?? in confirmed reports containing AI-generated child sexual abuse material, compared with the preceding 12 months.? ? More than half of this content was hosted on servers in the Russian Federation (36%) and the United States (22%), with Japan and the Netherlands following at 11% and 8% respectively. Many of these images and videos are so #realistic that even expert analysts find it challenging to distinguish between AI-generated content and imagery depicting the abuse of real children. It can also be just as distressing to view?if a person is not prepared or trained to #cope with seeing such material. Source: https://lnkd.in/d9HbSuZ3 At the Centre For Abuse & Trauma Studies | Training (CATS), we focus on #researching the intersection of #technology and online abuse, working towards better #understanding and #preventing the creation and distribution of harmful material.
