Two weeks ago I raced in the Spartan Trifecta World Championship. I am very grateful to AlignOrg Solutions for making that trip possible. As I reflect on this race and my performance I have been considering the mental aspect of racing.?A good strategy is required for racing and every athlete employs a different strategy suited to their strengths. The best athletes differentiate themselves by using their strengths strategically to outperform the rest of their competition. Knowing your competition is critical and knowing their strengths can often help you to develop your own strategy. In my own racing I use this principle to know when to push and when to conserve energy. I know competitors who will outperform me in certain sections of the course but, if I use my strengths strategically, I can still have a faster overall time.? ? I have also been reflecting on owning the outcome of any race. At the end of the day, everything that happens in the race falls on me. I am responsible for how I pace myself, how I handle hydration and nutrition, how I approach obstacles, and how I handle injuries or unexpected events. Whether I race well or race poorly, the outcome is a result of my decisions and actions and blame cannot be delegated elsewhere. Just as I own every aspect of my performance, leaders take ownership of the growth and success of an organization. When taking ownership, it is best to focus on what went well and what improvements can be made, not on making excuses for performance. Excuses remove responsibility from the individual and place it on an external source. Much more is accomplished, and performance improves as we focus on solutions and strategy to move forward.

Thanks to my partner, I eventually bumped into the 24 Hours of Le Mans race, an endurance-focused sports car race held near the town of Le Mans, France. Unlike most races which are fixed-distance, the 24 Hours of Le Mans race is won by the car that covers the greatest distance in 24 hours. Real Leadership vs being a "Manager". There is a WORLD of difference.... The world is full of people who "Manage" a process or a P+L or even a sales team or group, but they are often not really Leaders. They lack vision and the desire to drive real (uncomfortable) change and see it through. Instead, they “Manage” and follow metrics and surf dashboards and achieve incremental results. I am the former kind of leader (that's me on the left of the podium finish photo). The REAL kind that drives REAL change. When I took over the leadership of our 24-hr MTB race team I knew I wanted to drive real change. We had finished 23/120 for a few years, and while the team was happy with that result and our friends thought it was great, it really wasn't. So what did I do? I moved the goal posts: 23rd/120 isn't a good result. ?It was just ok for other teams, but not US. Not OUR team. After 24 hours of racing on little sleep and months of training, a podium spot is infinitely better. Then I made the experience better for the team. Where we once huddled under a tarp and had a small campsite with no power or running water, I made changes so we got a better campsite and I bought two 10x10 canopies. I also brought a microwave, a hose and spray nozzle, toaster, Christmas lights and a coffee maker to the event. We were now dry, hydrated, and ate hot food in the wee hours of the morning. I then set new goals for the team: We would have a dry campsite no booze or "deserts" and we would have an ultimate goal of finishing on the podium. These goals were not popular at first for the team. But I persisted. Goal - A top 10 finish at the next and following 24-hr events Stretch Goal- A top 5 finish Ultimate State-A spot on the podium Low and behold the first event until my Leadership we finished a shocking 6th place. This was the first time we had even cracked the top 10. We now were in the SHOW. We were known. And we were DANGEROUS. The goal posts moved again Goal- A top 5 finish Stretch Goal- A spot on the podium Ultimate State - 1st place Over the next 2 years we finished 8th and 10th again as competition had stepped up. But in August of 2010 we had some changes to our lineup. And we made the strategic decision of having our 3 fastest riders do double laps at night. This was a big sacrifice for these riders, but they did it for the team. Over the course of this event it was a real fight to keep our 3rd place but at the end of the event we had accomplished the goal of a spot on the podium as a team. We were all very pleased with this result. Had I been satisfied "managing" our team we may have seen incremental increases and a slightly better experience for the team and the campsite. Instead as a REAL Leader, I raised the bar with formal goal setting and drastically improved the experience and the team's results. Who do you want to be at work? A Leader that drives real change and greatly improved results or just a "Manager"?

I've been on the team the longest out of everyone here right now, except my mechanic Carlos. It's like home for me, you know? I like it. What sets the Dakar apart? The Dakar is the prestigious event. I still think the Dakar for me is its own personal grandaddy-of-them-all races. That's what I work for all year, the Dakar. Anything less than winning is kind of unacceptable, but you have to take it. You can't just go and win -it's not that easy. Obviously, just finishing a world championship round is difficult, right? So to finish the Dakar should be a victory in itself, but to win is a bonus, it's special.” 3 leadership related reminders we can take from Ricky’s statement: ?? Competing and winning prestigious categories requires continued reliable and committed support (enablement) ?? Losing might feel like the unacceptable, but sometimes it’s a pure victory and taking it for granted is almost dangerous ?? The ultimate win is a bonus, it’s something special - it’s not something you are supposed to count on, no matter how much you invest . . . As leaders, we can DREAM alone. But we cannot LIVE IT on our own. It’s the DARE part that is critical in the long run - so, who in your corner knows exactly how to take the edge off emotional confusion or cognitive saturation when it comes to leadership responsibilities? Our capacity to DARE in the long run is directly correlated to our ability to focus. I am not into racing myself, but from what I’m hearing Honda seems to have that reliable quality that enables riders to focus on what matters.
