Have you thought about this before? #Excerpt | 'Arjun Gupta and his colleagues coined a term for this concept: time toxicity. “We conceptualize it as the time spent in pursuing, receiving, and recovering from cancer treatments,” says Gupta, a gastrointestinal medical oncologist and health services researcher at the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis. “It’s not a completely new concept. But I think the way we packaged it and put it out there has put it on the map.” Gupta measures time toxicity as days in contact with the health care system, or “contact days,” regardless of the nature or length of the contact. Measuring time toxicity this way reflects a lesson he’s learned from patients: that even a seemingly short appointment can often become an “all-day affair,” he says. Time toxicity is particularly relevant to patients with advanced, incurable disease, according to Gupta. In these cases, the survival benefit that another line of treatment could bring may be “eaten up” by the time toxicity of the treatment, he says.? Access to rehabilitation services is crucial to survivorship. It is important to note that survivorship begins at the diagnosis of cancer. In this article, led by Michelle Mollica, PhD, MPH RN , Emily Smith Tonorezos, and co-authors, standards recommend that survivors be provided access and referrals to physical therapy, occupational therapy, and rehabilitation, among other supportive care services. Research in the pediatric cancer field demonstrates rates as low as 24%. End stage kidney disease requires kidney transplantation or long-term dialysis. Our latest blog sees Frank J.M.F. Dor, consultant transplant surgeon and clinical lead for transplantation at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, discuss the benefits of living kidney donation and organ donation more widely. “Dialysis patients have a much higher chance of dying than many types of cancer patients these days. The quality of life of dialysis patients is also significantly reduced – people become incapable of doing regular things such as going to work. Often, people do not see the struggles of kidney patients because in the early stages, there may be no obvious symptoms. “Successful organ donation transforms chronically ill people with a high risk of dying and a poor quality of life, into “healthy” people.
