New book reappraises the prestige of post-war British film comedy Eccentric Laughter: Queer Possibilities in Post-War British Film Comedy, authored by Dr Benedict Morrison (Faculty of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences at University of Exeter)?explores a number of themes, including eccentricity, queerness (and the concept of ‘domestic drag’ where domestic sets declare their own artificiality and expose familiar heteronormative narratives as myths), and laughter. The book also examines important motifs like ruins, characters doubling up on screen, and wildness. https://lnkd.in/eP_5U88x

Porter’s Five Forces model is taught as a way to understand industry landscape and the power dynamic relationships playing out – examples: Power of Buyer; Power of Supplier, etc. If you think about it, power dynamics play out in every relationship we have: parent-child; between spouses; teacher-student; policeman-citizen; boss-subordinate… etc. If you have something I need, or vice versa, our power dynamic is set. A new actor in the world of film/theatre has no power and is exploited – until they reach a level of fame to be able to get an equitable deal. So on and so forth. The lesson here: power dynamics shapes each and every human interaction we have. Understand it…

Marlon Brando: Hollywood Rebel isn't your typical biography. It's instead a fascinating and in-depth examination of Brando's cultural impact, and not only on film acting. He was the first major actor to acknowledge his same-sex experiences, to undergo and promote psychoanalysis, and the first "celebrity activist." Read my review at the New York Journal of Books.

Rejection is redirection. Rejection is redirection. Rejection is redirection...
Rejection is redirection. Write it on a sticky, and put it on your bathroom mirror. This mantra is true for Oscar-nominated director, Greta Gerwig. She once applied to prestigious graduate schools like Yale, Juilliard, and NYU and was told “no” by every single one of them, only to later become a Hollywood director whose films have all been Oscar-nominated for Best Picture. There's no denying she is a master storyteller. And yes, we will remind everyone once again that she directed 2023’s top-grossing film, and Warner Bros. highest-grossing global release ever, #Barbie.

On Casting: I began my work on casting by working in the theater, and later through my scholarship. I wanted to frame the considerations about casting through attention to both ethics and dramaturgy. I have given workshops on casting to my students every year for more than a decade, for various theaters, and recently for Netflix, discussing how identity layers onto a role. With each workshop, the examples and possibilities shift depending on the context. The possibilities for casting vary by identity, genre of performance, the histories of marginalized groups, and how identity is constructed onstage, film, or television. Ultimately, casting is part of the creative process. When resources are limited, there are questions that can be asked that will enhance the production and avoid diminishing the artistic vision. I recently wrote an article about the 9 different types of casting: non-deliberate identity casting (colorblind casting), conceptual, societal, cross-cultural, identity-conscious, conscious, identity-specific, skills-object, and coalitional casting. While this article uses examples from Shakespeare, much of what I wrote can be applied to other forms of theater and performance. DM me if you would like a copy or if you would like to set up a casting workshop for your organization. #PerformingArts #theatre #casting #Shakespeare #television #film #creativity #production #media #artseducationmatters #humanities #research #CulturalStudies
