The pic is from Ford Motor Company's Q3 results. Some established giants still struggle at times to make a buck from EVs, even with lowered costs from economies of scale, battery prices etc... The Q3 Financial Report shows Ford's electric car division lost $1.22 billion ($1.8b AUD) in three months. Q3 costs were down YoY by $500 million. The "expected industry wide pricing pressure" refers to bonuses Ford put on the bonnet to drive the discounts. However in this case it's one the company won't mind wearing so much: It's been subsiding chargers and their installation for customers, a smart play to drive loyalty. Generous, but it's also not a tactic that exists in a vacuum. As my Cox Automotive Inc. colleagues in the US noted in their Q3 EV report (link below) released this week, Q3 incentives "averaged more than 12% of the average transaction price, much higher than the industry-wide average of approximately 7%". It's not that EVs can't be profitable. It's just that right now many OEMs are having to underwrite discounts or other incentives to drive volume amid a price war. Today's intense competition, coupled with the challenge of finding new buyers, is bringing unmatched cost challenges. Hopefully the worm turns. The E-Transit I sat in yesterday in Melbourne is super fit for purpose, and the F-150 Lighting is super impressive (AUSEV?). The product seems good and the brand value is undeniably high.
