As the world focuses on the near-peer war between Russia and Ukraine, and the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iranian proxies, we can't ignore a resurgence in global terrorism. The disrupted Vienna attack this week is a clear victory for the intelligence and security communities--particularly with so many resources committed to securing the Paris Olympics. This is also another example of (1) online radicalization (harder to detect), (2) potential insider concerns (one of the subjects allegedly worked at the venue), and (3) the complexities of securing large events with soft outer perimeters. With so much focus on near-peer conflicts or escalations, this is a stark reminder that the security community simply cannot allow counter and antiterrorism muscles to atrophy.
