OK, nobody asked, but just for fun HERE is my vision for what I'm trying to do with my content here, and my business in general. It's great to put these things out there to hold yourself to account - and who knows, maybe you'll find it useful too. It's all based around something I call "The Starbucks Strategy", which is basically shorthand for this idea: - Great brands don't raise the ceiling, they raise the floor I call it “Starbucks” because that’s exactly what they did (though they didn't mean to). They didn’t produce the best coffee. Instead they massively raised the standards of?bad?coffee – turning the 3/10 norm into a 6/10. This is very different from what most brands try to do. Most brands want to raise the ceiling. They want to turn a 9/10 to a 10/10, and think that’s the way to create the biggest impact. Because hey, the best must be the most impactful right? Wrong. The impact of turning the 3/10s into 6/10s is far?far?more meaningful than creating the "best" of something. Starbucks have contributed infinitely more positively to global coffee culture than your favourite artisanal roaster, and that’s just a fact. (Even if that roaster considers them a blight on the coffee landscape). So what’s the relevance of this? Well, that’s what I want to do with strategy. I want to create “The Starbucks of Strategy”. I want to create a business that turns all the 3/10 strategies out there into 6/10 ones. I am probably not the best strategist. I am definitely not the most experienced, or knowledgable. I have not advised the boards of Shell, or Meta, or Lockheed Martin. And I probably never will. But I'm probably one of the best at “dumbing down and sexing up” strategy concepts. Making them quick, accessible, and fun. And that’s just what Starbucks did with real Italian coffee – introducing a “close enough” version of it to the world, and massively raising the average standards of coffee worldwide. Just think of the potential impact of this. Strategy is all about creating new value - something which most businesses AREN'T doing, because they simply don't "get" strategy. But if they did - even in only a roundabout way - we'd see an explosion of growth and value that would have an amazing effect on the cultural landscape. This is the potential power of successful implementing “the Starbucks of Strategy”. Now this might sound a bit grandiose, and after all who am I to think I can do this? But I'll give it a go. If you want to be involved, and be the first to see what I've got up my sleeve to make this happen, then make sure you subscribe to my newsletter (link in bio). Cheers, Alex
The easiest way to raise your standards is to raise your floor. It is the same as personal development, it is not the habits you add e.g going to the gym, it is the habits you remove that make the most impact on your personal growth e.g cutting out sugar. This is a brilliant strategy Alex, too many are pulling out their hair to reinvent the wheel. ???? ???? Ask what is our competition not doing well...(we see other people better than ourselves) ...go an fix that and VOILA instant upgrade.
I love this idea,?Alex.?97% of the world lives in 3/10 strategy environments, and that's where the leverage is - BTW, I think it's more like 1/10, so getting to 3 would be a massive improvement. ??
Loving this perspective. For me, the value lies in how the subject is communicated rather than in the subject itself.
Love this. When I think of guys “dumbing down and sexing up” business strategies that work, I think of Gary Vaynerchuk and Russell Brunson. Both guys that- love or hate them- have made massive impacts in the personal economics of many entrepreneurs. Great goal
The Starbucks analogy is great. It's refreshing to see a focus on raising the overall standard rather than just competing at the top tier. Your ambition to democratize strategy is commendable.Alex M H Smith
You’ve made me rethink and understand how strategy is where my imagination and creative brain are best served. I always thought it was or should be focused on brand. But, brand and the value of brand is subjective—where strategy informs all aspects of the business and its results. Thank you and keep doing you! You’ve got a big supporter in me bro. Alex M H Smith
Thank you raising the standards and inspiring many people Alex M H Smith
Alex M H Smith, the Starbucks of Strategy. Let's be real though, you're selling yourself short! You ARE a master. And it's a LOT harder to simplify complexity than people think it is.

6 个月Interesting take, Alex. But don't you think focusing on raising the 'floor' might lower innovation? ?? Raising the ceiling pushes brands to be exceptional, not just satisfactory. Would love to hear how you balance that aspect. What do you think?
