This is an article I co-wrote with a my fantastic colleague Leah Holmes earlier this summer. It was the third and final in our series looking at the challenges and the opportunities that heat decarbonisation brings. Here we focus on the fact that it's really an electrical problem and communities are are the heart of this. Microgrids can improve resilience, decarbonization and affordability of the electric grid, according to the?U.S. Department of Energy.?However, legacy state energy policies remain a barrier to timely development. In collaboration with the research group Wood Mackenzie, the industry trade group Think Microgrid has developed a road map for new approaches designed to promote microgrid commercialization across the United States. Ann Arbor set a goal to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2030. It plans to hit that target, whether the local utility does or not. The Michigan city is planning a series of community microgrids to deliver clean power to local homes and businesses and bypass grid reliability issues.
