Happy Park(ing) Day 2024! The transformation of our car dominated cities into livable, walkable, urban areas continues with the DIY urbanism of Park(ing) Day Participants. Transforming more of our paved areas into Parklets provides new opportunities for a variety of human activities and increased safety for pedestrians and cyclist. Repurposed Parking spaces have been used for some of the following activities; a wedding, urban farming displays, lawn bowling, marshland, and many more. This movement goes hand in hand with the city of San Franciscos new law which will prohibit parking within 20' of an approaching crosswalk. This open space will create greater visibility for drivers, thus protecting pedestrians and cyclist. To reduce the maintenance need of painting curb corners, this space can be retrofitted into new Parklets in the city. I commend Mithūn Architecture for creating a Western Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly habitat learning center at 585 Howard Street in San Francisco. Other endemic species to San Francisco such as the San Francisco Lessingea or Franciscan Wallflower may one day find new habitat in a Parking spaces, revitalizing the natural ecology of the city. What are some programs or activities you would like to see in a parking space near you?

Urban Ecology and Narrative Design: Crafting Stories in City Spaces As cities evolve, traditional urban planning often prioritizes functionality over human experience. A groundbreaking approach lies at the intersection of urban ecology and narrative design—the idea that cities should not just be built environments but also living stories. This concept can transform urban spaces, making them more engaging and sustainable. 1. Understanding Urban Ecology Urban ecology studies the relationship between living organisms and their environment, emphasizing biodiversity and green spaces. Recognizing cities as ecosystems allows planners to create spaces that enhance both human and ecological well-being. 2. The Power of Narrative Design Narrative design focuses on creating stories within spaces, allowing emotional connections with the environment. Transforming mundane areas into rich, interactive experiences makes spaces vibrant narratives inviting exploration and engagement. 3. Integrating Ecology and Narrative Combining urban ecology with narrative design offers a fresh perspective. For example, transforming an underutilized park into a “Story Walk” can engage residents in an ecological narrative, featuring native plants and wildlife that tell local stories. 4. Policy Implications Policymakers should promote collaborations between urban ecologists, artists, and community storytellers. Funding programs that support creative placemaking can help embed narrative design into urban ecology. Conclusion Merging urban ecology with narrative design allows cities to become dynamic environments reflecting their inhabitants’ stories. This innovative approach enhances ecological health and fosters a deeper sense of belonging. As urban planners face 21st-century challenges, embracing cities’ narrative potential may be key to creating sustainable urban landscapes. #UrbanEcology #NarrativeDesign #CreativePlacemaking #SustainableCities #UrbanPlanning #CommunityEngagement

In contrast to the Park which is typically passive and landscaped, or the Playground which is typically active and includes constructed elements, the Green is more of a minimal, flexible, and adaptive space which can be used for activity as well as standing on its own passively as something calming to the eye. Variety in urban greenspaces is a positive result of proper #citybuilding #todayspublicspace

Check out some of the amazing innovative designs that feature on our “Designing for #Biodiversity” island at Bio Spaces. First up, Green&Blue created the Bee Brick - an innovative nesting site for solitary bees, that can either be installed freestanding in a garden, or in place of a standard brick in a building or wall, to increase the number of habitats for non-swarming solitary bees. Next we have…Seedleaves.com…these aeroponic vertical towers can support biodiversity in urban settings where land? available for growing food and floral crops is scarce. They also reduce food miles and nutrient loss by reducing time from harvest to consumption. And finally…check out…BioScapes’ WildPod Mini - designed to quickly boost biodiversity in any residential, educational, community or commercial setting. It incorporates 10 wildlife habitats to support a range of species, from hoverflies to #hedgehogs, within an integrated garden planter. There are communities of living species (or ecosystems) all around us – even between the cracks in the pavement in urban environments. As designers we can support other species’ determination to survive within and beyond the built environment by creating opportunities for #ecosystems to establish and thrive at a range of scales. #BioSpaces is open to the public until September 30th at Roca London Gallery. Entry is free. Image credits: Green&Blue, William Benson, BioScapes Kate Christman Gavin Christman William Benson Adam Wade Alex Douglas Terry Smithson Hannah McGouran Jack Hodgkin Cara LeGault

?? Myth Busters: Are Street Trees Just Aesthetic? ?? Let's debunk the myth that street trees are just there to look pretty. Did you know that trees and other landscaping often play a crucial role in shaping not just the form, but also the function of our roads? Here are a few of the many ways trees impact the function of a roadway: 1?? Trees reduce driving speeds by forming canopies over a street, causing drivers to focus on the road in front of them and drive slower. 2?? Street trees provide shade, making both people and the pavement happy. 3?? Trees boost local businesses by providing more attractive and comfortable places to walk and spend time. 4?? Trees help streets that are prone to flooding by capturing and absorbing water. 5?? Trees create a sense of place, creating vibrant places for people to live and visit. https://lnkd.in/db-mpNKk #TransportationMyths #Mythbusters #UrbanPlanning #LanscapeArchitecture
