Today is Zero HIV Stigma Day. Despite all the advances in clinical care, we know that for people living with HIV, life can be difficult because of the stigma associated with HIV. Fast Track Cities London has been working on three key areas to tackle stigma - internalised or self-stigma, stigma in the NHS and other public services and stigma in society. Last year, AZDHS reported a 20% increase in new HIV cases in Arizona. People with HIV are more than their diagnosis. Let’s end the stigma and see the person, not the condition. You can start by: 1?? Learning the facts. Educate yourself about HIV, its transmission and prevention. 2?? Using inclusive language that does not show judgment. For example, talk about “people living with HIV” instead of “HIV-infected people”. 3?? Supporting people living with HIV. Only 14% of Black people who can benefit from PrEP are using it, compared to 94% of white people who could benefit. Black people continue to be disproportionately impacted by HIV, yet House leaders are proposing to cut 53% of funding from the Minority AIDS Initiative and $767 million in cuts to domestic HIV funding.
