We are in the middle of an ocean decade. In 2017, the United Nations declared 2021–2030 the UN decade of ocean science for sustainable development. During this decade, Sweden and many other countries have chosen to prioritise ocean literacy as a key factor for improving the state of the oceans. Ocean literacy is based on seven core principles, developed by marine scientists and educators. It is about understanding the importance of the ocean and how we affect it. However, according to a recent study by Havsmilj?institutet, only 28 percent of the approximately 3000 respondents knew of the term ocean literacy. I've been a long-time reader of Marcelo Gleiser's books. Gleiser, a renowned scientist and thinker, is my Brazilian countryman. Just came across a review of his new book "The Dawn of a Mindful Universe: A Manifesto for Humanity's Future". Still need to dive into the content, but I imagine he wishes we can reflect on our responsibility to the planet's salvation from climate changes. If you've read it, I'd love to hear your thoughts. I'm confident you'll appreciate Gleiser's brilliant arguments and articulation. Check out the review here: https://lnkd.in/dKmyqgDm

NEWS from the Riverhood & River Commons team: We are pleased to invite you to the?International Seminar 'Water Commoning Struggles'?organised by the Riverhood & River Commons projects (www.movingrivers.org). This event will take place on the?5th of July at Gaia 2?(Wageningen University campus), from 14.00 to 17.30. ? The seminar will focus on the problem that many of today's water dispossession and accumulation practices find their legitimation in discourses of efficiency, arguments of rationality and state-, elite- and market-centred ontologies and epistemologies. Next, it addresses alternatives based on water commoning struggles and commons (co-)governance initiatives. Building on the Riverhood and River Commons projects, it understands water commons as "networked socio-ecological systems that integrate social and natural communities to practice water governance based on mutual interdependence in terms of shared livelihood interests, knowledge and values". ? As we continue our June theme of caring for nature to support self-care, we invite you to discover the book Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Robin touches upon the key concept that plants and animals are our oldest teachers, reawakening our ecological consciousness in our daily lives. She also suggests the notion of giving and receiving from the earth, as we understand nature and indigenous wisdom, we can equally learn to give our own gifts in return.
