VESSEL REVIEW: Canadian towage company HaiSea Marine, a joint venture business formed by the Haisla Nation of British Columbia and local shipping line Seaspan, has taken delivery of two LNG-fuelled ASD tugs in a series that will be used primarily to escort gas carriers between the Pacific Ocean and British Columbia’s coastal waters. Built to a design by Vancouver-based naval architecture firm Robert Allan Ltd (RAL), the tugs have been named 'HaiSea Kermode' and 'HaiSea Warrior' by the Gitga’at First Nation of British Columbia. The vessels are notable for their dual-fuel propulsion that runs on both LNG and diesel, making them among the first LNG-fuelled tugs to be operated in Canada. Following delivery, the tugs have been put to use escorting gas carriers between the Pacific Ocean and LNG Canada’s new export terminal in British Columbia. The newbuilds each have a length of 40.2 metres (131.8 feet), a moulded beam of 16 metres (52.4 feet), a maximum draught of 7.1 metres (23.2 feet), a moulded depth of six metres (19.6 feet), a gross tonnage of 996, and a projected operational service life of 40 years. The dual-fuel propulsion delivers a bollard pull of more than 100 tonnes (98.4 tons). The propulsion also has the ability to generate indirect forces in escort of approximately 200 tonnes (196 tons). 'PSA Gemini' is the first in a new variant of an existing RAL series of harbour tug. The design, which is intended for operation primarily in major ports and marine terminals, emphasises the safe and capable operation of handling large ships, particularly those with extreme flares. Due to the need to work in either a push or pull mode under the flared ends of large containerships and car carriers, the tug's design has a relatively low forward sheer, and a wide, heavily fendered bow. With the low bow, the tug is designed to make transit or open water voyages stern-first in “tractor mode.” Accordingly, the tug then functions very efficiently with only one winch, which is located in a manner that ensures maximum efficiency for both ship handling and towing operations. Designed by Canadian naval architecture firm Robert Allan Ltd (RAL), the newbuilds include one harbour tug and one ocean tug, both of which are constructed to owner and Philippine flag requirements. The tugs, the first of these two RAL series to be built by JSI, used existing RAL designs measuring 30 metres (100 feet) and 27 metres (89 feet) long, respectively. The vessels were built using the latest advances in modern design technology and fitted with state-of-the-art equipment to meet the requirements of the end user. As these will be the first locally-built examples of the two series, JSI wanted to enhance their efficiency, improve their safety and performance, reduce their environmental impact, and provide their respective crews with high levels of comfort and ease of operation even in extreme environments. Although the tugs belong to different series, there are nonetheless similarities between the two vessels particularly with regard to crew accommodation, wheelhouse layout, and some of the onboard equipment. KEELS LAID FOR KOTUG CANADA’S FUTURE METHANOL-FUELLED TUGS Kotug Canada, a partnership between Netherlands-based towage company Kotug International and Canada’s Horizon Maritime, recently held a ceremony to mark the laying of the keel of two new escort tugs that will be powered by methanol propulsion systems. Designed by Canadian naval architecture firm Robert Allan Ltd (RAL), the tugs will service the Trans Mountain Expansion Project that will transport crude and refined products via pipeline from Alberta to British Columbia. Deliveries of the vessels are scheduled to commence by the middle of 2025. The 44-metre tugs will escort tankers from the harbour limits of the Port of Vancouver to the open Pacific Ocean through the commercial shipping lanes of the Salish Sea. To provide this service, Kotug Canada has partnered with the Sc’ianew First Nation from Beecher Bay, strategically located along the shipping route. VESSEL REVIEW: Tianjin Port Barge in northern China has expanded its towage and harbour services fleet with the recent acquisition of two new ASD tugs in a series built by compatriot Jiangsu Zhenjiang Shipyard. 'Jingang Lun 36' and 'Jingang Lun 37' were built to a design developed by Canadian naval architecture firm Robert Allan Ltd (RAL). The two new tugs are the second generation of intelligent tugs built for Tianjin Port as part of the latter’s broader plan to create an intelligent port. The first generation of four tugs with intelligent-ship notation were delivered in 2019 and were also designed by RAL. The development of the tugs is part of a research cooperation between the Chinese and Finnish governments with the objective of improving port and shipping safety in Chinese waters through the introduction of intelligent vessels. During a six-day extensive sea trial, 'Jingang Lun 36' – with 'Jingang Lun 37' serving as the test and evaluation vessel – completed a series of 34 comprehensive, self-control auto navigation tests that included automatic searching, approaching, and accompanying a target vessel at sea. RAL said that this was the first time that a ship handling tug – Jingang Lun 36, in this case – has been equipped with this kind of system and approved by a classification society. Sun Bo, Deputy General Manager of Tianjin Port Barge, meanwhile remarked that the technology allows a tug to navigate autonomously under supervised conditions. Full article link in comments.
