Our live fundraising workshop went way over time last night, but Ariel Renous wasn’t leaving until almost every question got answered. From finding your first champions to dreaming even bigger, we touched on the real scenarios founders face when getting their businesses off the ground. Students asked: - What’s the best way to connect with investors when you’re just starting out? - What’s the best way to follow-up after an initial investor meeting? - How did you value your business early on, and how much equity were you willing to give away? Investors are not just looking for product market fit, the are looking for founder product fit. Pitching your business is a good way to demonstrate both.

Big takeaways: - Refrain from pitching first to your ideal investor, because your first pitch is likely going to have mistakes. - General rule of thumb for valuing a company in its early stage is to give away 10-20% of the equity against the sum you are raising for that round. - ESOP: Good rule of thumb is to reserve about 10% equity for employees. - Never seem desperate for funding. Remember, you are in a position to select the ideal investor that aligns with your vision, not the other way around. - Ambition and Vision are 2 of the most important parameters investors look for in an entrepreneur. - Make sure you focus on what your differentiator is. - It is very important to talk about the user profile of your products or service. - Most investors aren't as tough/brutal as Sharks on Shark Tank.
