I'm pleased to announce that in our?Future Made in Australia Act we are incorporating community benefit and First Nations benefit as one of the key principles and criteria of the Act. That’s Chris Bowen MP talking, Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy. Minister Bowen also wants to see more First Nations jobs, and ownership of and equity in clean energy projects. "We know that First Nations people did not share in ownership and equity when it came to oil and gas for example, often and on First Nations land. "We can't make that same mistake again and we won't make that mistake again." The Minister also talked about the inclusion of First Nations benefit criteria in the Capacity Investment Scheme, which might include "shared ownership, it might be equity, it might be offtake agreements” negotiated with industry proponents. And he spoke about electricity disconnections faced by so many First Nations communities on pre-paid metering. “...First Nations people in remote communities in Australia have amongst the highest disconnection rates in the world – frankly at developing country levels. "That is not acceptable to any of us in Australia in 2024. "It must be fixed and renewable energy is just the opportunity to fix that because you can't disconnect the sun if it's powering your house during the day, and you can't disconnect the battery if it's managed to store that energy." ? There’s a simple way to dramatically reduce the cost of living. However, many people, especially those on lower incomes, are missing out on this opportunity. The Federal Government has the power to help reduce the cost of living. If they choose, they can empower every Australian to cut their energy bills by harnessing the power of Australia’s abundant sun and wind, right in their own homes. ? ?? This is why Psychology for a Safe Climate has joined Renew Australia for All, an Australia-wide coalition, formed to encourage the Government to make this choice. A stark reality that demands action—not acceptance. ?? More than 1 out of 10 people in the EU do not live in a sufficiently warm home in 2023, new figures from EU's statistical service, Eurostat show. While the situation in Belgium, Slovenia, or Italy–the three countries where SOCIALNRG is building energy communities–is not the most dire, our impact is far-reaching. Renewable energy systems are entering the homes of social housing tenants–a technology turning what was once considered a privilege for the few into an accessible reality. Once we get a firm grasp on the right actions, lessons learnt, the dos and don'ts, we will support our EU neighbours in taking this path—bringing energy to communities for real.

As the adoption of renewables expands across the country, the need to address socio-economic disparities of clean energy access has become evident to federal and local regulators. Communities with the most urgent need for reliable energy often have the least access to it. Many Europeans, 10.6%, struggled to heat their homes in 2023 due to energy poverty. The EU took urgent actions, but also wants long-term solutions. One of these is to help citizens create and control their own energy through energy sharing and community energy projects. The EU is also changing its Green Deal and making new rules to protect citizens from energy market changes.
