?? Students are paying for attachment/internships? Did you know that completing a degree in Kenya requires at least one industrial attachment, commonly known as an internship? While this provides a great opportunity for hands-on learning, some troubling news has come to my attention. Certain industries and companies are turning these internships into profit-making schemes. Students alias "comrades" are being asked to PAY for these opportunities, often after a brief, not-so-professional interview. In some cases, they even demand monthly payments throughout the attachment period. This practice is not only unfair but also unethical. On Youth Day ????, we remember the brave South African youth that fought for a better future. Their sacrifices paved the way for a more just and equitable society. As we reflect on their legacy, let's reaffirm our commitment to creating a society in which every young person has the opportunity to reach their full potential. This means investing in education, job creation, and youth development programs. It also means challenging the stereotypes, attitudes and behaviours that perpetuate discrimination. Recently I was invited to be part of a very important conversation, where we discussed the negative effects of damaging stereotypes on both the youth and organisational culture. On Youth, Peace, and Security (YPS) and unpaid internships: You promote the youth, peace, and security agenda in all forms. You seek to involve us in your projects in any way possible when it's handy and convenient for you. You understand and speak about the need to provide livelihoods and opportunities for the youth to prevent radicalization, yet you offer unpaid internships, fully aware that it will exclude 99% of candidates from the global south and 95% of candidates from the global north. Indeed, a majority of young people in the world (big surprise) are unable to work full time for free because, yes, we need to eat and pay rent. Don't tell me there is no money.
