It had been quite some time since I last indulged in this dessert. However, on that particular day, a sudden longing for sweetness overcame me as I walked past a stall showcasing this delightful treat. In a moment of weakness, I succumbed to the temptation of indulging in the glorious dessert. Chendol, a beloved Southeast Asian dessert, has a rich cultural history reflected in its name. The word "cendol" is believed to have originated from the Indonesian word "jendol," which means bump or protrusion, possibly referring to the worm-like strands formed by pushing the mixture through a perforated ladle during preparation. In Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia, cendol is a popular sweet treat, featuring green jelly-like strands made from rice flour, pandan leaves, and sometimes pea flour. These vibrant green noodles are combined with shaved ice, red beans, and drizzled with luscious coconut milk. Interestingly, in Thailand, the dessert is known as "???????????????" (lod chong Singapore), literally translating to "tunnel through Singapore." This unique name emphasizes its connection to Singapore, possibly suggesting its introduction from the region. Venturing into Penang, Malaysia, the popularity of cendol is evident with long queues forming at renowned stalls. The meticulous layering of shaved ice, red beans, and the green cendol strands creates a delightful and refreshing concoction, especially when bathed in the indulgent richness of coconut milk. Whether you're savoring it in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, or Thailand, cendol transcends borders, captivating taste buds with its delightful blend of textures and flavors, making it an iconic dessert that unites Southeast Asia in sweet harmony. Merdeka Month Special: Malaysia’s Wonders ???? Day 17: The Durian – King of Fruits Today, we dive into the world of Malaysia’s most iconic and controversial fruit – the Durian. Known as the “King of Fruits,” durian is beloved by many for its unique flavor and aroma, though it’s certainly not for everyone! Key Highlights of the Durian: 1. Distinctive Smell: The durian is famous (or infamous!) for its strong smell, which has earned it a reputation that both attracts and repels. It’s a fruit that divides opinions but remains a symbol of Southeast Asian cuisine. 2. Varieties of Flavors: Malaysia boasts numerous varieties of durian, from Musang King to D24 and Red Prawn, each with its own texture, flavor, and level of sweetness or bitterness. 3. Nutrient-Packed: Despite its divisive taste, durian is highly nutritious, packed with vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats. It’s also a great source of energy. 4. Cultural Experience: For many Malaysians, eating durian is more than just enjoying a fruit; it’s a cultural experience. Families and friends gather to share this spiky delicacy, making it a social event in itself. As we continue to celebrate Merdeka Month, let’s appreciate durian as part of Malaysia’s rich culinary heritage, representing both tradition and the adventurous spirit of our nation’s food culture. NY Scene Report: It's ?? Onigiri time ?? . You can expect the scrumptious rice balls to be everywhere, and here is why... While cruising through Happier Grocery, a store so cool it makes Erewhon look like a Piggly Wiggly, I noticed their "Onigiri Program." It was by no means the first time. La Levain Bakery in Singapore is doing Onigiri croissants (which look fire). O-Kome brought Onigiri to the Champs-élysées Omusubi Bar Suzume and J Town's are super popular in Toronto, but the real aficionado pick is the grilled onigiri at Yakitori Kintori. Onigiri hit a lot of the needs of the current moment. They are relatively inexpensive, easy to mass produce with little skill (and can be made by machines) and provide opportunities for cultural fusion and self expression. Their appearance in popular Japanese cultural exports (like manga) are driving awareness among a younger consumer base. Also it is time for the triangle to have a resurgence. Beyond the spiritual unity conversations, there is a harmony and balance to a good equilateral. Part of the reason pizza took off was the contrast between the round shape and the square frame of instagram. A lot of how we consume food is visually, nothing new. But what is now new is how the visual is intermediated through the limits of our tech platforms. Rectangular foods and rectangular frames? bland. Think of the neon colour of the ever popular Aperol spritz. Pops out in photos in a way that a glass of sparkling wine might not. As we move into a period of cultural maximalism, the triangle is back! #food #trends #triangles

The Origins Of Musang King Durian & How It Got Its Name ~ With its bright yellow, buttery thick flesh, and creamy texture, this durian variety is mainly grown in Kelantan, Pahang, and Johor, earning its reputation as one of the most luxurious and expensive durian types. Also known as Mao Shan Wang, Musang King is said to have been developed and cultivated in Malaysia during the 1990s. However, there are different stories regarding the origins of this beloved fruit variety. In one account, it is believed that a Chinese farmer named Wee stumbled upon an "odd-looking" durian tree. After tasting its fruit and falling in love with it, he decided to graft it and bring it home to Tanah Merah, Kelantan. In another version, a man named Tan Lai Fook from Raub, Pahang, reportedly discovered a durian tree in Gua Musang, Kelantan during the 1980s. Fascinated by the tree, he brought back a branch to graft, subsequently attracting the interest of other cultivators. Another story recounts that Tan Eow Chong from Penang came across the golden-flesh variety at a roadside stall. The colour, described by the seller as resembling that of the sultan's palace, caught Tan's attention. Upon tasting the fruit, Tan experienced the sensation of the flesh "melting in his mouth", inspiring him to cultivate this particular durian variety. Tan initially sought to obtain a branch for grafting from the seller, who declined the request. Undeterred, Tan returned later with a villager armed with a rifle. For a fee, the villager assisted Tan in obtaining a branch by shooting it off. Thirty-five years later, Tan earned the moniker 'Durian King' in Malaysia as his Musang King business prospered, primarily due to success in the Chinese market. Selamat Hari Batik Nasional! Our new post about #Batik, here we go!
Today, Indonesian people celebrate National Batik Day! This day holds significant cultural importance for Indonesia to encourage people to wear batik. Batik, a traditional Indonesian textile art form, is believed to date back to the 6th-7th century. Batik was created using a wax-resist dyeing technique that allowed artisans to craft patterns and motifs. There are several types of the way batik is produced, including 'batik tulis' (hand-drawn), 'batik cap' (stamped), and 'batik lukis' (painted). The word 'batik' derives from the Javanese terms 'bathik' or 'amba' (to write) and 'titik' (dot). Batik making was limited to the palace and mostly was produced for the king and the family. In modern times, batik has become popular with the common people and has become an Indonesian national identity. Over the centuries, batik has evolved, influenced by various cultures and historical events. Selamat Hari Batik Nasional! Happy National Batik Day! #Batik #Indonesia #Nusantara #BatikArt #NationalBatikDay #HariBatik #HariBatikNasional #Textile #Art #Culture #Tradition #Java #Bali #Sunda #IndoMeInsight
