One key strength of a critical educator is their ability to question “taken-for-granteds”, policies, strategies and methods which have been upheld as the best or only ways of educating or “what works”. A critical educator will question who determines what a method “working” means. They would question if “working” means dominated, docile and compliant children or thriving, autonomous, capable children who have developed a sense of belonging and responsibility within a learning community. A critical educator cares about the state of children’s lives and their experiences and how these affect their education. They continue to resist norms, even within education systems, that add to any negative, unjust conditions of children’s lives.
ICYMI: In 2022 we spoke w/ clinical psychologist, Dr. Naomi Fisher, about how she sees the negative side-effects of "what works" in school manifest as stress, anxiety, and depression for her young patients and what we can do to make schools more humane learning spaces! https://lnkd.in/gJkwScgY

?? Listen to the newest episode of The Lancet Regional Health in conversation with... Gabriel Otterman (EuroCAN Vice-Chair) and Jordan Greenbaum (International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children), who joined The Lancet Regional Health - Europe Deputy Editor, Daniela Marín, to discuss the findings of their Systematic Review and Critical Appraisal of the European Guidelines on clinical care for child sexual abuse. The study done in collaboration with EuroCAN members addressed the critical challenges in the clinical management of Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) evaluating the existing CSA national Clinical Practice Guidelines (NCPGs) in European countries. Major findings: ?? half of eligible countries lacked NCPGs; ?? content of NCPGs varied significantly within and between countries; ?? existing NCPGs lacked many components in state-of-the art clinical practice compared to WHO reference standards, particularly in safety and risk assessment, interactions with caregivers, and mental health interventions. ?? It's time to put 'what works' into action at a national scale while continuing to build the evidence base and find new and better ways to promote people's mental wellbeing and prevent the onset of mental health conditions, wherever we can. Three things would help. - A small specialist team focused on promotion and prevention within every Health Department/Mental Health Commission in Australia to support planning, funding, capacity building, coordination and oversight. - A promotion and prevention Strategy/Framework and Action Plan for each jurisdiction in Australia that provides a roadmap for action. - Dedicated funding for promotion and prevention initiatives in every jurisdiction's Budget cycle, with co-funding provided by the Commonwealth Government. In other words, the promotion of mental wellbeing and the prevention of mental health conditions needs to be given the same attention in government mental health policy as the creation of a strong mental healthcare system.
There is a significant gap between researching how to prevent mental health concerns and putting it into practice. The outcomes from the Prevention in Practice Summit provide a valuable roadmap for action. We thank everyone who shared their perspectives at our event last year and our event partners Prevention United, Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) and Manna Institute.
