I visited my first art school recently! Rhode Island School of Design, better known as RISD (pronounced rizz' dee). It was such a fun experience to see what goes on at a selective art school. I was pretty blown away to learn about all of the cool things the students are doing, and all of the majors they can choose from. My favorite part of the tour was connecting with a student I know and getting a behind- the-scenes look at their major, industrial design. Some facts about RISD: -There are 16 art majors, and you spend 2/3 of your time on campus in studio. The most popular major is illustration, industrial design is growing in popularity. -There are studio spaces for students everywhere, including in the housing buildings. -Professors are professional artists. -You take the same foundational art curriculum as everyone else your first year. That means that your portfolio submissions should consist of a wide range of materials and techniques, as they want to see an artist who takes risks and has a broad skill set. -RISD students can take courses at Brown (right next door) via cross-registration. In fact, there is also a RISD-Brown dual degree program with a BA at Brown and a BFA at RISD. As you can imagine, this program is highly competitive. -They have a nature lab. This was the highlight of the tour for me! Students can check out all sorts of specimens to study - from bugs to plants to bones! -The culture is collaborative (students work on projects together), and students also spend a lot of time critiquing each others' work to prepare for being professionals. #RISD #artschools #collegesanduniversities #collegetours

OLYMPICS ON YOUR MIND? Pictured below is Yale's Payne Whitney Gymnasium, which opened in 1932. The architect, John Russell Pope, was awarded a silver medal at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics for its design. Pope was the first American to earn an Olympic medal for architecture/architectural design. WAIT WHAT?! You read that right, architecture and architectural design were once Olympic events. Between 1912 and 1948, art competitions were a feature of the Olympics because International Olympic Committee (IOC) founder Pierre de Coubertin thought them necessary to recapture the essence of the ancient Olympic games. The art competitions were grouped into five distinct categories: architecture, literature, music, painting and sculpting. Naturally, entries into these categories typically had an athletic theme. #olympics #architecture #design #history

I was being introduced recently and the speaker said... ...she's great with manipulatives! (my mind automatically went to manipulation and ?? ) No matter what you call them... they are the loose parts that occupy your museum by the hundred OR THOUSANDS (if you're lucky). In our session at the Association of Children's Museums annual conference this year we talked about how you can take one of your favorite loose parts and turn it into the focus of a full on Transitional Exhibit**! Here you'll see how the Golisano Children's Museum of Naples leaned into the foam brick option from Playlearn USA and created a transitional space that specifically focused on Building Materials. Beyond the THOUSANDS of bricks that were available, there were... tool belts hard hats storage areas seating wall graphics a special logo and even a wooden climber to build around! This is how Transitional Exhibits take shape. Not just a building material put out in the middle of a space, but a space with compliments to make the building material shine and to bring inspiration to all the young contractors, brick layers, laborers, artists, designers, architects, demo experts and supervisors. Exhibits that can go into storage and then pop back out for a shorter period of time to create a new exhibit space. Not a traveling exhibit, not facilitated by staff, not just a cart of blocks in an empty room, but a full exhibit that just 'pops up' and fits right in with the rest of the museum exhibits. Today's post is from Aberdeen, at Kings College campus. This shows the one of the oldest parts of Aberdeen University, and dates back to 1495.? Aberdeen was home to many world-leading scientists, including James Clark Maxwell, the father of modern physics, and professor at Marischal College in 1856. In the city museum at Provost Skene’s House you can see a quote from Professor John Mallard, whose team created the first ever MRI scanner in 1980, which states this:?“Persevere in your endeavours, to the end – success or failure.??Ignore those – even those powerful people – who say, “It won’t work” - and there will always be plenty of those!”? Which made me think a little about all the other amazing people whose success is so well known.??I’m sure they had many failures along the way, and difficult though these are, they kept going.??If you set your mind to something, it pays to be determined! (and a little obstinately persevering too…???) All of which brings me back to this building, and the thousands who will have passed through it over the years, some who achieved great things.? The monochrome effect was used again with these buildings – quite a few reviews of my last post mentioned the timelessness this effect has, and I felt this was a great case in point to use it - in professional photography, every picture should always tell the story.
