We are thrilled to announce that the City has been awarded an Urban Greening Grant by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER), in collaboration with WALGA. This grant will help us expand tree canopy and vegetative cover, working towards creating a greener, healthier environment for all. ?? Through this project, we aim to: ?? Increase tree canopy & plant cover ?? Mitigate urban heat island effects ?? Boost biodiversity & connect bushland areas ?? Improve hydrological functions & social amenities ?? Promote health and well-being for residents We’re excited to begin vegetation efforts in the following reserves: ?? Portcullis Park ?? Bellona Walk ?? Kennon Reserve ?? Restoration of kiwa Heritage hot springs that is affected by the floods of River Nyamwamba. - *Established as a community-based organization*: Kiwa Heritage was founded in 2013 as a community-based organization to promote environmental conservation and preserve the cultural norms and values of the Bakonzo people. - *Medicinal value*: The hot springs are believed to possess medicinal value, which is a significant draw for visitors seeking healing. - *Conservation efforts*: The organization has made progress in discouraging environmental degradation, particularly along the Nyamwamba valley. - *Popularity*: Kiwa Heritage has gained popularity, attracting around 60 visitors on weekdays and over 200 on weekends. - *Expansion plans*: The organization aims to expand its buffer zone to occupy all three acres of land, introduce additional activities like sport fishing, and establish another fish pond. - *Government support*: The government has allocated two billion shillings for the development of hot springs in the district, including Kiwa Heritage, under the Agro-Industrialization for local economic development (AgriLED) initiative.
