I've heard that many authors fear or worry editors judge them and their manuscripts while editing those manuscripts. They use this fear to justify not senting their manuscripts to editors. I've also heard that editors do not judge their clients and manuscripts while editing, but I'm sure every single editor does. We make judgments about people. Every person judges every other person with whom they come into contact. We forget to remind ourselves that judgment need not be negative. "This is a really clean, well-written manuscript." "This client is truly considerate, a joy to work with." "This story is wonderful!" Those are all judgments. Judgment isn't bad. It's a reflection of a person's impressions, of what that person experiences. It does not mean an editor cannot be objective or discerning. It's our job to find flaws and be critical so we can help you improve your writing: editors are naturally judgmental. If you fear judgment, then you won't learn and improve. Without a critical, objective editor, the reading public may very well judge your work harshly. #henhousepublishing #editingservices #proofreadingservices #ghostwritingservices #bookdesign

What exactly is a style manual, and why might an editor ask which one you prefer? Writers and editors turn to style manuals to learn writing and formatting standards that ensure clarity, consistency, and credibility within their academic or professional field. For example, American journalists and news media publications often prefer The Associated Press Stylebook (AP), while American book publishers often prefer The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS). In my latest blog post, I delve into the fundamentals of style manuals and their significance in academic and professional publishing. Click the link below to discover why I might inquire about your style manual preferences and explore a list of common American style manuals. Each offers unique insights and guidelines tailored to your discipline and target audience. https://lnkd.in/g-vvPUny #WritingTips #Editing #StyleManuals #ProfessionalWriting #CommunicationSkills #EditorialServices #ProfessionalEditing #CopyEditing #DocumentPreparation #Proofreading

Welcome to my five day series that will show what your copy editor is doing while they’re working on your manuscript! Behind the Scenes with a Nonfiction Copy Editor: Day 1—Laying the Groundwork Copy editing is the critical middle step between developmental editing and proofreading, where precision meets readability. Here’s how it improves manuscripts: ? Clarity: I refine sentences for smoother flow and easier comprehension. ? Consistency: I ensure terminology, formatting, and punctuation are uniform across the text. ? Credibility: Eliminating errors and inconsistencies builds trust with readers, making your book a credible resource. A professionally copy-edited book not only enhances the reader’s experience but also positions your work as polished and professional—key to boosting sales and good reviews. Aspiring writers, take note. The less work you make for an editor, the more work that editor is likely to give you. In other words, the writers who adhere to established guidelines, who format their submissions properly, and who polish their work well before sending it in are the ones who are going to get more assignments.

During my time at GenZ Publishing, I was the supervising editor for Kathyn Halberg's "Animal Attraction" (https://lnkd.in/esYp77fR). Now, I've launched my own editorial services site for romance and women's fiction authors! Should you want to reach out to [email protected], I'd like to let you know that I provide the following services: Developmental: I take a look at the manuscript as a whole, assessing it on an emotional level first, and then on an editorial level. I help you adjust your story and its characters, making sure that everything makes sense. I may suggest moving paragraphs or rearranging chapters to help you create a more balanced and engaging narrative flow. Line: I address the creative content, writing style, and language use in every single sentence and paragraph. That means filtering out unnecessary words, cliches, and repeated information. I ensure a consistent point of view and convey emotion and atmosphere. All the while, I keep in mind your original tone and style. Copy: I make sure your grammar is correct on every single page. Proofreading: I identify and weed out any leftover spelling mistakes. I check the manuscript for extra spaces, bad word breaks, wonky chapter headings, incorrect page numbers, and erroneous punctuation. Rates: I take $0.028 per word for developmental editing, $0.020 per word for line editing, $0.021 per word for copy editing, and $0.015 per word for proofreading. "Editing isn't crucial." "Hiring an editor won't work." I know you're tangled with thoughts. Let's test your thoughts. ? 1. Editing enhances the clarity of your book; by ensuring that ideas are communicated effectively. 2. A good editor catches grammatical errors that authors might overlook; leading to a polished final product. 3. Editors provide an objective perspective; they can identify inconsistencies and plot holes. 4. Thorough editing improves the overall quality of the manuscript; making it more appealing to readers. 5. Editors help maintain the author’s voice and style; while refining the text for better readability. 6. Editing is essential for maintaining credibility; it reflects the professionalism of the author. 7. A well-edited book increases its chances of success; in the competitive self-publishing market. ? Did you spot semicolons are misplaced? Comment the correct sentence number; I'll respond with a GIF. ? I came across one of the quality posts by Adina Edelman emphasizing the importance of editing and editors in the self-publishing journey. Kudos to her great work. #selfpublishing #editing #grammar #editor
