Who said road crashes cannot be prevented? Taking action, even in a non-forgiving road network, and implementing low-cost measures, lives can be saved! A compelling example is the implementation of a speed enforcement corridor on a notorious stretch of road network where 34 lives were tragically lost over a decade. This 4 km road network in Evia, Greece—just 84 kilometers distance from Athens—has seen a remarkable transformation. In the two years since the speed enforcement corridor was implemented, there have been zero road deaths and serious injuries. Many thanks to all those who supported the project and mostly to SRF of UK, the Hellenic Police and the local Authorities for their unwavering support and contribution to this initiative. Working hand in hand, private and public collaboration can bring results. Road safety is not an accident and one death is one too many! Interventions such as high-profile road signs and VMS evolis radars, along with awareness raising, can truly make a difference. Moreover, data that are regularly collected from this initiative have proven to be of multiple uses and value, highlighting, also, that when drivers feel their speed is enforced, it significantly impacts their driving behavior.
