Early Halloween shopping is on the rise, with 47% of survey participants beginning their shopping before October, according to the National Retail Federation’s?annual survey?conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics. The figure is up from 37% five years ago and compares with just 32% in 2014. Total Halloween spending is expected to reach $11.6 billion, after last year’s record-setting $12.2 billion.?

Looking for a quieter, calmer shopping experience? Walmart Canada has just the thing. The retail giant recently introduced sensory-friendly shopping every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at its 403 stores?across Canada. According to Tara Deschamps' recent article for The Canadian Press, the effort is an attempt "to make shopping trips easier for people who have disabilities, who are sensitive to busied environments, or who are just looking for a quieter retail experience." Walmart Canada isn't the first retailer to launch sensory-friendly shopping in Canada: Mastermind Toys, Sobeys, and Cineplex have all experimented with similar measures over the past few years. And Walmart stores in the US have sensory-friendly hours every day between 8 and 10 a.m. local time. But sensory-friendly shopping is a great example of how retailers can create great shopping experiences by understanding what their customers want.
