Recently, I've been observing more messages that say: “Looking for a Senior React Developer with Tech Lead experience.” This poses an important question: Why do companies openly normalize the expectation of Tech Lead responsibilities while offering the salary of a Senior Developer? It feels like a lie from the very beginning. It creates a lot of cognitive noise with questions like: “What do they mean by this? Is it worth that salary or not? Should I even apply or not?”

Job Description : -Looking for someone with expertise in JavaScript, React and Node and Typescript?– MUST BE STRONG IN ALL 3 Supporting the internal platform (One App) which is the backbone for all customer facing applications that the 10K developers at AMEX support -OneApp - enterprise framework - build journey and experiences on top of OneApp - don't have to worry about how they build out their code. Can just focus on building which is on top of React - a serverless solution for front end. -They have One App which is built on Node, with React libraries - they use redux, webpack. Strength in both - not Node back end API's but how the server works. -Component library - input -JS functions - this is a slice one data / serverless or back end functions what you'll be doing: ? ?????????????Developing an open source, enterprise web framework ?????????????Providing support for said framework to 1,000+ engineers, including training ?????????????Designing intuitive, functional and extensible APIs ?????????????Building cross platform components and libraries for future reuse and open source ?????????????Optimizing software for maximum performance across a vast array of web-capable devices and browsers as well as servers. ?????????????Automating builds, testing, deployments and otherwise manual processes ?????????????Thoroughly reviewing pull requests and identifying breaking changes ? How do you classify a Full Stack Developer against a dedicated Back End Developer or Front End Developer? I'm not suggesting for a second that one is "better" than the other! Don't get me wrong, but I've had some interesting conversations with other developers over what makes a Full Stack Developer "Full Stack". For me, a Full Stack Developer is someone who can apply themselves obviously anywhere in the stack and can upskill and apply themselves very quickly to new tech and new parts of a tech stack. But, I don't believe a Full Stack Developer, even senior, should be a specialist in all of these areas, but should know enough to be productive in all areas. Whereas, a dedicated Front End or Back End developer is very much a specialist in this role and should know their part of the tech stack inside out, understanding best practices for the frameworks in use and understand fully how to optimise everything about their part of the stack. Ultimately for me it comes down to, are you a generalist or a specialist? Both require different skill sets and both can be challenging in their own right with different career paths.
