A tribute to the EDI event to mark the opening of the Scottish legal year… Whilst the dust settles and we all reflect on Monday’s event: what we did well, what we could do better, what we missed, what we enjoyed, what we didn’t enjoy, let’s not forget the purpose of the event. It was designed to shine a light on the benefits diversity and inclusion can bring to our profession. It was to set ourselves, especially those in positions of power and influence, some challenges. The data is collected, measured and analysed - every 2 years in fact - there is no doubt our future talent is increasingly diverse. The challenge, however, is how do we nurture and support that talent for it to reach it’s full potential? Here is a video created by Annie Allan, with a little input from me. This is just one example of how intergenerational and intersectional skills can be brought together to allow creativity and innovation to flourish. There is much for us to learn from our young colleagues and allies. Equally there is much they too can learn from us. We need safe spaces to do that. We need to bring down the inevitable barriers and bias we all have, that can cause us to stifle innovation. It means sacrificing time, energy and money but the results, when implemented with a clear vision, properly resourced, far outweighs the sacrifices. Every year at our BFW/Marcum Christmas Party, we view our “End of Year Wrap” video. It’s important to take some time to reflect on what we’ve accomplished as a team at the end of each year. It’s easy in the fast-paced world we live in to overlook what we’ve done,? But it’s important to take a moment to reflect on what we’ve done each year. We watch this video to: - Reflect on our achievements - Appreciate the accomplishments we’ve had as a team - Recognize that not one achievement or accomplishment is made by one single person individually. Taking the time to view these moments, and to acknowledge our amazing team efforts, helps us stay humble. Reflecting helps us realize we can’t accomplish our mission without each other. In this time of reflection, we also look forward to the next year. This helps us finish the year out strong. It helps us say thank you and remember the picture we’ve painted for the future. And then get to plan for the future. We know what we’re trying to accomplish and what we need to get there. We’ve accomplished so much in 2023.? And we’re hoping 2024 will be another amazing year!
