Super insulated walls have been a part of cutting-edge design and construction in the residential arena since the late 1970s. The Larsen–Truss design is an outstanding example of the creativity of designers at that time, which has carried over to many great ideas (which you'll see demonstrated in this article ) used today. These super-insulated designs are not yet mainstream but absolutely need to be given consideration on every new and renovation project, be it residential or multifamily, that we design and build today. Since buildings need to be ever more resilient to a changing climate, and we also need buildings be part of the Climate Change solution by reducing emissions via high energy efficiency, super insulated walls incorporate the best of our building science knowledge, are a key to making that happen! Check out this great article from Green Building Advisor, and if you're not already signed up with them, you can try it out for free :-) Enjoy and share it with others! #energyefficiency #climatechange #insulation https://lnkd.in/gjm8AT77

?????? ???????????? ?????????????????? ???? ?????????? ?? ???????????????????????? ?????????????????????????? ??????????????. ? Everytime you visit your clients, for some reason, you always find yourselves standing outside for hours admiring the paintwork and the colors that just transformed their houses into homes. One such client is Ms. Xashe Katiya, the senior contributor to the Indlulamithi Scenarios that the president referenced in his opening of parliament speech after the recent elections. There is nothing more pleasing than discussing such topics or bodies of work with their authors, in the comfort of their homes. ? The scenarios sought to respond to the following questions:? 1. What is South Africa like in 2035?? 2. How prosperous are its people?? 3. How cohesive is its society?? 4. How far has it come in the 40 years since the dawn of democracy? ? They arrived at a conclusion that these scenarios capture three possible trajectories for South Africa in 2035.? ? ?????? ???????????? - ?????? ?????????????????????????? ???????????? ? Africa’s loudest birds, these noisy foragers are opportunistic expansionists, always on the move. Seeming anxious and skittish, their brash calls warn of danger, real and perceived. They do all they can to survive. Resilient, they build strong nests, returning to the same trees each year to remake their Hadeda homes.? ? ?????? ?????????????? - ?????? ?????????????????????? ???????????? ? Vultures love a feast but will settle for scraps. Skilled and relentless, their keen eyesight allows them to swoop in wherever opportunities await. They fight off other birds and lash out at smaller scavengers for what they consider theirs. There is little left when they’re done.? ? ?????? ???????????? - ?????? ?????????????????????? ???????????? ? Kalahari sociable weavers build the largest tree nests in the world. Cooperatively built nests can house 100 bird families. Their incredible resilience and cooperative nature allows them to thrive and recover from disruptions and disasters. On Monday night we created a structure entirely out of cans! We teamed up with PCL Construction to participate in the annual CANSTRUCTION GLOBAL HEADQUARTERS design competition in support of the @dailybreadto foodbank. Please vote for our team by liking our image on the CANSTRUCTION GLOBAL HEADQUARTERS Instagram page! Vote here: https://lnkd.in/eEGVY7wY Canstruction is a nationwide initiative that brings together teams of architects, designers, engineers, and builders to construct extraordinary structures using non-perishable food items. It's not only a friendly competition but also one of the largest internationally recognized food drives in the world. Once the event concludes, all the canned goods will be donated to the?@dailybreadto, a non-profit organization. Our 2024 build, “Conundrum”, was built using 4,807 cans of tuna. The eight-person structure brings attention to food security, best detailed in our build description: As natural disasters, political struggles, inflation, and a growing population continue to rise, we have all begun to feel the pressure of what it means to have limited resources. Some, more than others, may feel the struggle now more than ever. Only in a united stance do we provide the chance to confront current and future problems. Our concept motivates you to reflect on your own reality and feelings towards food insecurity. Depicting eight people standing in a united circle, each interconnected to show their unification and shared struggle for food, we highlight seven cans that stand in the middle. Fulfilment is a proposition posed to each of the eight people, but with only seven cans, the question we are faced with is what will they do with the resources? Do they share, or take for themselves and leave one hungry? We would like to express our gratitude to all our team members, our build partners PCL Construction and our sponsors Guide Woodworking Inc for their invaluable support. #CANstructionTO?#CANstruction?#architecture #design

Another blow to Sauchiehall Street has been confirmed as work started last week on the demolition of the iconic ABC building. A dangerous buildings notice was issued to the building’s owners last month, so I wasn’t surprised to see work getting underway. Despite campaigners’ protests, and although the deadline for the demolition wasn’t until December, it’s now underway. Who knows how much of this once-popular music venue and cinema will even still be standing by the time this paper goes to print. Sad times indeed. The Category C-listed building was famous for its art deco fa?ade which many had hoped would be saved or partially retained, but apparently that wasn’t viable. It’s a shame that Glasgow is losing such an iconic building, however after both fires at the Glasgow School of Art, some feel the area has become an eyesore and it’s time things got moving. Not long ago, Glasgow City Council confirmed that the works to the city’s once most popular street would be complete before Christmas. Yet on Sauchiehall Street you’ll still find areas dug up, temporary fences, trees chopped down and tight pedestrian spaces. It’s no wonder some folk are fed up really. Hopefully some of the biggest works on this once-thriving street will be wrapped up for Christmas, or I suspect there will be some angry business owners and residents. #SauchiehallStreet #ABCDemolition #HistoricLoss #GlasgowHeritage #UrbanDecay #ArtDeco #CityDevelopment #GlasgowSchoolOfArt #CampaignForChange #SaveOurBuildings #GlasgowCityCouncil #StreetWorks #UrbanRegeneration #FedUp #GlasgowHistory #IconicGlasgow #CulturalLoss #BusinessImpact

Pittsburgh’s Female Architects and Advocates: We ARE Women’s History There’s an old adage that history is written by the victors, but I would argue that history is actually written by the storytellers, the advocates and promoters who craft the narratives about the victors. We don’t often think of the built environment as having winners and losers, though there are certainly people who win and lose when commissions are awarded, buildings are built, landscapes and neighborhoods are transformed. How the stories of the outcomes of these factors is told is as important as the outcomes themselves. One of the areas considered in the Government’s recently published review of the perceived barriers to retrofitting energy efficiency measures into #historichomes in England report, was the planning system. Read our latest blog where BWF Technical Director, Kevin Underwood expands on what the National Planning Policy Framework says about heritage assets and #conservation, how the planning system should be used to ensure well designed and beautiful places, and how these two considerations can have a significant bearing on the choice of timber products, such as windows and doors, for any property or development. https://lnkd.in/efVwEc48 #woodworking #joinery

As the debate around demolish+rebuild vs. retrofit continues, we asked ourselves, would it be possible for one project to: ? Save an historic building from demolition ? Re-purpose redundant building stock ? Tackle the climate emergency ? Help solve the housing crisis ? Combat loneliness ? Reduce deprivation ? Drive regeneration and growth ? Save money for individuals and the taxpayer ? Look beautiful Sound too good to be true?
