Bridging the Divide: Integration, Differentiation, and the Dance Between Separatism and Holism in Architecture In architecture, as in many domains, we often grapple with the tension between integration and differentiation, holism and separatism. These concepts can seem like opposing forces, yet they are the driving principles behind design, systems thinking, and human experience. In my latest research paper, I introduce a novel framework called Combijism, which proposes a cyclical process where integration and differentiation work together to create more adaptive, resilient, and human-centered design solutions. This paper explores how these dualities shape architectural design, urban planning, and broader systems, encouraging us to see the whole and its parts as complementary and interdependent. Combijism is an innovative and original term by me coined to describe a new philosophical framework for understanding the dynamic relationship between integration and differentiation, holism and separatism. It combines the concepts of "combination" and "ism", representing a system of thought where these seemingly opposing forces are seen not as binaries, but as complementary, cyclical processes that can evolve together. The goal is not to choose between separatism or holism, but to embrace the dynamic relationship between them—creating spaces that are both holistic and adaptable.
