Thank you to the representatives from our Hubs across the North for joining some of The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) team for a catch-up this afternoon. The meeting focussed on hearing from Hub committee members with updates on opportunities and challenges they’re seeing in the region, with a lot of important topics packed in to our session. Leigh Renshaw MCIOB MAPM PMP CMIOSH took quality and safety as a theme, advocating collaboration and partnering, including cross-sector learning from the pharmaceutical industry. This is a sector from which we can learn a lot about embedding a “getting it right first time” culture, an innovative approach to sharing learning and best practice which is definitely worth exploring. Matt Crawford BSc Hons MCIOB ACIAT talked about sustainability and asked a couple of thought provoking questions – given the sustainability improvements MMC can help deliver, is there more that should be done to promote it? Thinking of opportunities that can come with new technology and encouraging innovation, is there a risk of losing that momentum in the current economic climate? It was acknowledged that tackling sustainability isn’t always supported in the current policy environment, with Amanda Williams FIEMA CEnv and Eddie Tuttle providing updates on some of the relevant #CIOB activities. Michael Brearey FCIOB CMgr FCMI C.Build E FCABE CEnv FAPM FInstLM and Russell Thompson FCIOB shared some of their thoughts and ideas around tackling the skills gap. I recognised much of what they mentioned, as it comes up in most of my meetings with members, and absolutely agree that – among other things – getting careers advisors and others who influence people making career decisions to understand what a fantastic industry this is could help enormously. As ever, I want to say thank you to our Hub committee members for their time and that I greatly appreciate having the opportunity to have this real-time dialogue with members on a regular basis.
