The Curtiss H-1640 Chieftain was an unusual American 12-cylinder radial aero engine designed and built by the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company in the mid-1920s. In contrast to most multi-row radials, where the cylinders in the rows are staggered to present better airflow for cooling, the Chieftain used the inline radial arrangement with the cylinders behind each other to allow pairs of cylinders to share a cast cylinder head and camshafts. The hybrid ramjet-turbojet engine represents a significant breakthrough in aerospace propulsion technology, merging the operational features of both turbojets and ramjets into a single, more adaptable engine. This inventive engine design starts with a turbojet phase for takeoff and initial acceleration, utilizing its efficiency at lower speeds to generate the necessary thrust from a standstill. As the aircraft reaches higher speeds, the system smoothly transitions to ramjet mode, taking advantage of the ramjet's superior efficiency at high speeds to propel the aircraft beyond Mach 5 (6174 km/h). This transition is crucially enabled by the generation of a shockwave within the ramjet section, a complex process that allows the engine to effectively utilize high-speed airflow. Such a hybrid engine could significantly broaden the operational range of high-speed aircraft, combining the low-speed flexibility of turbojets with the high-speed capabilities of ramjets into a single, innovative propulsion system.

#Boeing "When people say I changed the culture of Boeing, that was the intent, so that it’s run like a business rather than a great engineering firm." - Harry Stonecipher, former Boeing CEO, 2019 Wheels, panels fall off, door plugs get ejected in flight, poorly designed rocker switch for pilot seat adjustment fails in a way to cause 50 injuries, one critical. 1990s multiple instances of rudder reversals with two accidents and 157 killed because no redundant hydraulic valve in tail and it was not designed for operation at altitude. 2018-2019 MCAS system designed with single angle-of-attack sensor that sent erroneous information to automatic trim: 346 killed in two accidents. No, no longer a great engineering firm. Some of this is poor maintenance that may be exacerbated by poor design. But Boeing saying it lost paper records of door plug maintenance and overwrote video is beyond anything. Even small airplane airframe and engine logs are kept as a record of maintenance for the life of the airplane and indicated when, what, and who for the work. This both to meet FARs and to be able to sell the airplane. No logs indicates something illegal was, wasn't done, including not keeping logs.
