"Hey Kristin, what do you think the blind community really needs?" Jamie Ring dropped this game-changing question way back when she was working with Spark Therapeutics, Inc. to shake up the world of inherited retinal diseases with their groundbreaking treatment, Luxturna. And you know what? No one had ever asked me that before. Can you believe it? I've shared this story and the impact with so many of you in the pharmaceutical, rare disease and clinical research communities, on your stages and in within your organizations. Jamie's passion for truly understanding the lived experience of patients like my sons was the change we needed in our community. She made sure Spark's approach was all about us – our mindset, our needs, our priorities. Jamie's dedication to our community set a whole new standard that I hold everyone in this industry to. After our paths went separate ways following Luxturna's FDA approval, I didn't see Jamie for ages. But then, this week at the World Orphan Drug Congress in Boston, there she was, across the room. It was like a movie scene: Long lost friends, shocked to see each other again, our wide eyes of shock followed by huge smiles as we made our way across a crowded convention floor toward each other! What a moment! Finding folks like Jamie, who not only get it but also make sure everyone on their team gets it too, is like striking gold. And it is rare in our rare disease journey to strike that gold. But there are folks stepping up to the plate and the following Jamie's lead. We are blessed. Either I'm a wet blanket, or the ALS community has a problem...or both. But here we go (again): ? This post from Nuseir Yassin about NeuroSense Therapeutics' PrimeC is inappropriate. It includes wild hyperbole and inaccurate claims regarding a combination drug with weak mechanistic plausibility and Phase 2 data that are favorable but haven't been controlled for potential imbalances in the study arms. The dexpramipexole and AMX0035 examples should be all we need to understand the point: currently used clinical endpoints in small, short, potentially imbalanced Phase 2 trials do not tell us whether a drug works. ? I don't know Nuseir, so I don't know his motives, and I have to assume he sincerely believes that PrimeC works. The data to date don't support that--the most one should conclude from the Phase 2 data is that further study is warranted--but perhaps he's been misled by the company's congress presentations, in which they make inappropriate claims about the data (I've posted about that before). However: he's narrating in front of an image that shows the New York Stock Exchange with NeuroSense banners hanging from the eaves. Should we ignore the obvious impression that the hyperbole is aimed at potential investors? ? At a minimum this is a bad look. At worst it's going to harm people living with ALS by peddling false hope. Please can we stop with this?

Pulmonary embolism One of main reasons for death due to clots in lungs is 1. lack of awareness of symptoms (so we don’t go to GP) 2. Lack of knowledge of VTE by healthcare professionals- (delay in diagnosis ) We can reduce the deaths by just asking the question- could this be a clot?? The signs are symptoms do NOT always follow the textbook definitions, but there is often a hint:- 1. Recently stopped taking blood thinners, 2. Recently had a big operation, 3. Recently had a baby THINK VTE have a great Sunday.

So what's the common thread between successful biotech CEOs ? In preparing for this panel I thought doing 1-1 calls ahead of time would be a cool way to get to know a set of accomplished CEOs from the New England biotech community. The odds of getting everyone on one Teams call seemed pretty low right ? Well, let me say these calls have been an absolute highlight of the past month for me. The most important takeaway observation (if you can't make it to COG New England next week): The passion these CEOs have for the underlying patient challenges is what gets them moving each day. The fundraising and clinical data journey isn't easy. These CEOs press forward through that difficult journey because they understand they have an opportunity to help bring cures and treatments to the people that need them.
