Starting the day at Chewton Glen is always a great way to begin, especially when discussing sustainable leadership at their venue. They truly demonstrate leadership in their estate management sustainability. I had the pleasure of facilitating the New Forest Business Partnership's monthly business breakfast in their lovely light dining room. Thank you to Matthew Lawson and Alice Smee for hosting such a fun event and providing the opportunity to discuss sustainability from macro (Doughnut Economics Action Lab (DEAL), anyone?) to micro (washing your recycling is key to keeping it out of landfills). Sustainability isn't all eco though - it is important we remember the economic and social aspects too. Thank you to all those who bravely made commitments to alter their behaviour. Those unable to make their commitments this morning are invited to do so in the comments ... as promised! It was lovely to see familiar faces Nigel Burt Darren Pestell Miranda Laughton Kerry Bishop Peter Lashmar ?? Dave Dodge LBIPP EP Jamie Forster Kirsty Gray (thank you for the lovely 1:1 too) and of course Nancy Hyne BEng MSc who was generous enough not to lip synch my words on sustainability! In addition, it was great to meet Megan Carter Holly W. Karen Gold Daniel Ratcliff Emma Stileman Jo Ferguson Kels Noades Sophie Collins and Vicks Ward ?? My apologies to anyone I have omitted. I lay down the same challenge to you reading this, as I did to our group today: What ONE thing will you commit to doing differently, to make your business more sustainable? #sustainableleadership #businessbreakfast #newforestbusinesspartnership #greenleadership #facilitation #sustainablebusiness #bethechange

?? I appreciate the shout-out in The Wall Street Journal today! ? When I began my sustainability journey two decades ago, my colleagues would leave empty cola cans on my desk (for recycling… get it?) and I was supposed to champion double-sided printing. ? Fast forward to 2024: The role of sustainability leadership has evolved significantly. No longer confined to backroom marketing, we're now key players in driving business operations and growth. ? According to a recent report Weinreb Group Sustainability Recruiting, the number of Chief Sustainability Officers (CSOs) in U.S. public companies has surged from 29 in 2011 to a whopping 183. Over three-quarters sit on leadership teams, and more than a third report directly to the CEO. Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/gKr2kh7d

I don't even know where to start with sustainability." Two years ago, these words came from a lab director over a simple cup of coffee in Gloucester, MA. Today? That same lab is pursuing Platinum-level Green Lab certification. Let me share how one conversation transformed Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute: The Journey: Month 1: Started with a single glove recycling bin Month 3: Added kitchen composting Month 6: Built a dedicated green team Year 1: Secured corporate funding Year 2: Full sustainability program with team of 12 The Secret? We never tried to boil the ocean. Instead: ? Started tiny ? Built confidence ? Celebrated small wins ? Grew organically ? Let the team lead This lab went from "where do we start?" to becoming a sustainability leader in their field. ?? Question: What small step could you take today that might spark a bigger change tomorrow? #Sustainability #LabScience #GreenLabs #Leadership

Yes! Love it. I was recently at an event at a hatchet throwing place which all are typically byob. When the giant glass wine bottle we all drank was empty I asked the owner where the recycling was, her response, she didn’t have any trash cans for recycling! ?? I was honestly horrified and confused as we are talking about glass and beer cans, not plastic here. Surprised to as this was in NJ and it’s 2024 that she did not have a can for these things. What to do…this is giving me the inspiration to figure out the next step as the reason why I’ve learned of late some people don’t recycle ?? is because they think it all ends up in a landfill. We need to change that mindset, that people are out there making a change, people like Franziska here, company’s like NJ local Terracycle that upcycle ?? just about anything you can think of, etc. I think people need to step 1) recycle if your town recycles, let the town tell you to stop but don’t you not do it bc you don’t have all the facts of where it goes, do your part. 2) do some digging and yes find out what happens to your recyclables and make sure they are being recycled properly. Stay involved locally and take action if your town is not doing the right thing, speak up for your community environment. I’m going to myself take my own advice, not step 1, I am an avid recycler but step 2, to make sure what I am recycling is going where I think it is and if not, find out what I can do to make sure it does.
“The key to our success so far isn’t that we had all of the answers in the beginning or tons of money to try this thing out. The key was that we simply started, and we kept going … And for us, finding a way to help with a problem much, much bigger than us meant taking that first step.” Watch Franziska Trautman’s full talk on how her empty bottle of wine turned into a large-scale sustainability solution: https://t.ted.com/ufs5ht7
