If you are interested in regenerative agriculture, I invite you to join me at the Regen AgriFood Coalition in the Heartland (ReACH) Innovation Summit on February 6th & 7th at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis. I will be moderating a conversation with Paimun (PJ) Amini, Senior Director of Venture Investments at Leaps by Bayer about “Using an Innovation Playbook to Scale AgTech Solutions”. We will be discussing an initiative that PJ is spearheading, working closely with industry leading?entrepreneurs, scientists and investors to create transparency and nomenclature on what it takes to bring new products to market in the agriculture sector, including timing, cost, regulatory process, as well as key obstacles to overcome. The Innovation Summit is being organized by ReACH, which is a coalition launched by BioSTL and Bayer and includes member organizations representing the region’s global agrifood corporations, with the goal of collaborating on building a regenerative agrifood system that will meet its members’ net-zero carbon and sustainability commitments. Well…where to start to try and sum up the #worldagritech innovation summit in London! As a farmer, we often only see technological innovations when they make it to farm level so to be able to gain an insight into the people and companies working to develop the solutions for farming problems was fascinating. The theme running throughout the summit was definitely focussed on finding more ways to produce food sustainably. In this country, it can feel like the narrative pits food production against sustainability as less land is being used for food production and being used instead for rewilding and green agendas. It gave me a real sense of perspective to look at the global picture which the summit offered - 28% of the world’s population are malnourished and we need to increase food production by 50% by 2050! For me, producing food can, is and should be working alongside nature and the environment. Technological innovations will undoubtedly help us do this but as was reiterated many times, farmers must be allowed to be profitable through a redistribution of wealth in the supply chain to be able to invest in the technology.
