Agriculture is an important part of NC's culture and economy. But farmers in NC have fallen behind in recent years. Did you know that farmers in NC only make 1/2 as much per acre as farmers in other states like Iowa, Georgia and Virginia? It's time for a change in leadership. I'm running for the position of NC Agricultural Commissioner. I have a proven pro-business track record and forward-thinking vision. My platform includes investing in the state’s hemp industry; investing in high-value tree crops like hazelnuts, chestnuts, and orchard fruit; and bringing more produce shipping and handling capacity to North Carolina. "What I have observed, not just through Steptoe Farm, but through other cooperative systems is that when you provide access to ownership and a sense of autonomy in what people do, you will get the best and most creative versions of them. Ownership is a powerful tool for keeping talented people in their community." Take a moment to hear Dominic Hosack's story on Power Station Podcast and be inspired. Deep into his academic studies about food systems and public health he decided to tackle food deserts in Black and Brown communities by becoming a producer himself. He founded Steptoe Farm, a cooperative, along the Patuxent River, where he grows abundant crops of produce, teaches neighbors to become growers and is a leading voice in a growing movement for food sovereignty. All of this is accomplished through cooperative ownership, which is expanding business opportunities and strengthening connections with other producers. Dom is now exploring ways to make housing affordable to those who want to become worker owners in Steptoe Farm and with other nearby producers. Together, as the Patuxent River Cooperative they are leveraging their collective power and finances to expand land acquisition. In other words, Dom and Steptoe Farm are changing food systems and looking to produce at a larger scale. He is an awardee of the Greater Washington Center for Employee Ownership's 2024 Annual DC Coop Impact Awards, an initiative of Rochdale Capital. That grant provided the capital needed to meet critical infrastructure needs on Steptoe Farm. It also connects Dom to support, guidance and new shared equity and cooperative networks. As I become more involved in agriculture and engage with farmers in our region of the country, it is all too alarming how fast farmland is disappearing. I don't blame a farmer for selling their land, but we should wonder where our food will come from if we no longer have farms. Let's empower farmer collectives and support equitable land access!?? In recent years, we have witnessed the increasing challenges faced by farmers when it comes to securing farmland. Rising land prices, commercial development, and competing land-use interests have created barriers that threaten our local farming communities as more and more farmers struggle to find land that they can steward for the long haul. But there is a farming model that offers hope and promise when it comes to land access, one that we are thrilled to invest in more deeply as an organization: farmer collectives. Though this model has been around for centuries, interest in collectives has increased by 36 percent across the United States since 2013 (Food & Environment Reporting Network, 2021). Similar to cooperatives, farmer collectives offer an alternative to individual ownership, where farmers can pool their shared skills, knowledge, assets, and resources together to increase rates of success. Who can relate to this? For me, it's the "Lovejoy 160" who to this day I have no idea who they are or much of anything about them. I would argue this is a name from 3 generations ago. When I make an initial estate assets summary, I always start with the farms, First is always the "Home farm" Then, typically a bunch of random names of farms none of which are family names. Sorta like giving directions by saying turn at the 4 corners where the old country school used to sit. Getting to tour other forms of Agriculture across the country might just become a new hobby of mine. ???? While in Virginia last month, I was able to tour an elderberry farm right in the heart of the breathtaking Blue Ridge Mountains. ?? Whispering Meadow Farm is an all organic, homegrown, elderberry farm that creates elderberry juice, tea, and nectar all on their historic farmstead property. The farm manager, Jean, was gracious enough to give me a tour of the farm and the everyday processes that occur to create the products.?? Knowing absolutely nothing about elderberry production, I was fascinated. I learned more that day than I think I did a whole week in school. ?? ??????And the more I have reminisced on that experience, the more I realize the vital importance of people learning about how their food is made and where it comes from. We as consumers have the choice in who we support. We keep farms and businesses alive by choosing where to put our dollars. ??In a world where the ag industry is already hurting and less and less individuals are choosing farming as a career, it has never been more important to SHOW the world what we do and WHY supporting local farmers matters. ??????
