Reasonable adjustments are a cornerstone of inclusive workplaces, ensuring that disabled employees and job applicants have equal access to opportunities. Under the Equality Act (2010), employers have a legal duty to make these adjustments, but it’s about much more than compliance—it’s about fostering a culture of respect, understanding, and belonging. Reasonable adjustments can take many forms, from physical changes to a workplace to providing additional equipment or offering flexible working arrangements. These adjustments are tailored to the individual, recognising that one size doesn’t fit all. For example, an employee with mobility challenges might benefit from changes to the physical workspace, while someone with a neurodiverse condition might need adjustments to their workload or communication style. Creating an inclusive workplace starts with open communication. Employers must engage in meaningful dialogue with employees to understand their needs and explore practical solutions. Regular reviews of policies and practices are essential to ensure that adjustments remain effective and relevant as circumstances evolve. At its heart, making reasonable adjustments is about recognising the value of every individual and creating an environment where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
