The?Students Working for Communities Act?was recently introduced in Congress. The Act fosters and expands?student opportunities to participate in community service under the Federal Work-Study Program, which is uniquely important for afterschool STEM programs. For instance, "College students often provide a variety of services, from bringing in exciting curricula such as science, media and the arts, and engineering to supporting literacy and math tutoring to contributing to research, program infrastructure, and sustainability." The summer slide has been a concern since 1996, with studies showing significant losses in reading and math skills over summer break. Recently, it was found that children in grades 3 to 5 lost about 20 percent of their school-year gains in reading and 27 percent in math during summer break. At The Child Center of NY, we address this challenge head-on. Our afterschool services at over a dozen sites provide a meaningful connection to the school day, ensuring continuous learning. Programs offer a mix of homework help and enrichment in literacy, STEM, arts, sports, health, leadership, and community service. Our Beacon and Cornerstone programs extend these opportunities into evenings and weekends, fostering further engagement. Children from low-income families are disproportionately affected by the summer slide, impacting their education for years. Research by James Kim, Ed.D., of Harvard, shows that much of the reading score gap between low-income ninth graders and their middle-income peers stems from summer learning differences accumulated between first and fifth grade. Through our targeted programs like COMPASS for elementary school students, made possible with funding from NYC DYCD, we strive to bridge this gap and support every child’s educational journey. Together, we can combat the summer slide and ensure success for all children in our community. Below you can find The Child Center resources for summer learning in article 2. Investing in the learning and development of teachers means investing in the community. Creating a pipeline of success is what happens when community organizations comes together and open the access to resources.
In our refreshed Blueprint coming soon, we explore how high-performing education systems work hard to bring people and institutions across the community together on behalf of young people. This piece by Dr. Cassandra Herring of the Branch Alliance for Educator Diversity offers examples of just that. "Trough community partnerships, we can build a pipeline of educators equipped to thrive in today’s classrooms on day one, delivering a more inclusive and equitable education system for all." https://lnkd.in/gqXevdDh

Independent Women’s Forum: Dr. Keri D. Ingraham: Politically Unstable: The Battle For Universal School Choice https://lnkd.in/gsY7cTeX There are pockets of amazing innovation happening around our country in K-12 education, but they are far too rare. . . . In 2022, two states, Arizona and West Virginia, enacted universal school choice, creating a free market K-12 education landscape. This allows parents to take their taxpayer money to the educational provider of their choice that will best serve their children. In 2023, Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Utah each passed universal or near-universal school choice laws. Thus far in 2024, the momentum isn’t slowing as Alabama has joined these states, bringing the total to 11, with more on the way!

Education is the path to a larger life, and it's crucial to address the challenges of enrollment in advanced coursework and success rates in Kentucky, indicating that?students might not be unlocking their full academic potential. In her op-ed for the Courier Journal, Prichard Committee member Dr. Julia Link Roberts advocates for a significant shift from opt-in to automatic enrollment for advanced courses, grounded in specific criteria. This evidence-based policy change aims to diminish barriers, especially for underrepresented groups. Supported by research from The Education Trust, providing students with opportunities for advanced coursework not only increases?effort and engagement but also addresses issues like absenteeism and suspension, contributing to improved graduation rates—challenges faced by many Kentucky schools. Dr. Roberts is calling for the passage of an automatic enrollment bill during the 2024 legislative session. This bill would bridge gaps in education, ultimately improving economic and education outcomes across the commonwealth. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eidMhrrR #KentuckyEducation #KYGA24 #BigBoldFuture
