#ThoughtfulThursday Inclusion starts with understanding. ?? I’ve found that taking a step back to reflect on the diverse needs of my students often leads to the most meaningful connections. Every student comes with their own unique story. It’s up to us to really see them and adapt our approach to meet them where they are. Whether it’s offering extra support or just taking the time to listen, these small actions can make all the difference. I’ve learned that inclusion isn’t about having all the answers, but about being willing to grow, learn, and try new things to ensure every student feels valued and heard. ?? #ThoughtfulThursday #InclusiveEducation

It is National Inclusion Week (NIW) 23 September - 29 September But is it really? Is it a time to celebrate inclusion and take action to create more inclusive workplaces? The theme is year is 'Impact Matters' and as I thought about this I couldn't help but think of the Sixth Form students I supported years back as the Wellbeing and Safeguarding Practitioner. It was an email with a list of students and asking me to do something with them. Now 'something' is unclear but also showed a resignation of those that sent the email and believe you me the students knew about the resignation of others. I saw then how social categories can shape students' opportunities and challenges in life, the deal the non-Russel Group Universities prospective candidates got, and how their backgrounds and identities played a significant role in other's decisions about them. What has intersectionality got to do with anything? Like with my amazing then students, Intersectionality explores the interconnected nature of social categorisations such as race, class, and gender, and how these overlapping identifies contribute to shaping opportunities and challenges someone has in life. Think of your Work place: ??The glass ceiling ??Unequal Pay ??Lack of representation in Leadership positions ??Unconscious bias in recruitment ??Unconscious bias in promotion processes ??Limited mentorship and networking for certain groups ??Just a number and not truly consulted or involved This experience underscored the importance of understanding intersectionality and its real-life implications, particularly in education and career paths. It's crucial for educators, mentors, and society as a whole to recognize and address systemic issues that may limit opportunities for certain individuals, ensuring that every student has the support and encouragement they need to pursue their dreams. I was coaching two females recently for whom this was their pressing agenda. The feeling they had of being side-lined and not involved because of these very categorisations and feeling under-valued in their work place despite the amazing impact they are having with their clients and service users. ??And so I ask, hypothetically of course: ???As a colleague to these two females what everyday interactions would you be having with them to bring inclusion in action? ???As a leader, what actions may you be taking to address intersectionality and foster inclusion and diversity? #NationalInclusionWeek2024 #Inclusion #Diversity #Workplace #Change
