For those with a Tuesday morning commute, this interview is certainly eye opening. One thing about the Steward Health debacle is the sale of the physician group. Rumor has it Optum is poking around in this mess. Patients, nurses, physicians, and communities are probably feeling helpless and out of control as this whole mess unfolds. Physicians and nurses need to go the Massachusetts capitol and make it known that trading a PE disaster for a for profit arm of UHG is not a winning strategy. Keep it local and regional. Hospitals are supposed to be an anchor of healthcare provision in communities. How did we get to this point? Where are we going? Do we keep letting corporate mindsets and greed simply destroy communities and the lives of those who provide the care--namely the nurses, physicians, pharmacists, social workers, techs, and other support staff who signed up for careers to make a difference? PE has no business in healthcare. None.

During a recent Senate hearing on private equity in healthcare, Dr. Don Berwick proposed a groundbreaking idea that resonated deeply with many clinicians across the country. Dr. Berwick suggested that all individuals involved in healthcare, not just medical personnel but also administrators, should swear to the Hippocratic Oath. This would fundamentally align everyone's actions with the core principle of "do no harm," ensuring patient care and ethical standards are the priority across all levels of healthcare management. ?? Why is this significant? The Hippocratic Oath is a timeless covenant that has guided medical professionals to prioritize patient welfare and ethical practices. Extending this oath to include administrators could allow all of us - patients and clinicians to hold administrators accountable to a certain ethical standard, especially in a landscape increasingly influenced by profit motives.
