SAAB Group to Assist Defense Forces with AI and XR Technologies.
The Ministry of Defense (HM) supervised Defense Innovation Research Institute (VIKI) and the Swedish SAAB Group, the manufacturer of the Gripen fighter jets, have signed a cooperation agreement including a schedule of specific steps for joint work.
According to Magyar Nemzet, VIKI’s designated CEO, Deputy Secretary of State László Deme, held talks with the management of the SAAB group and agreed on concrete steps for joint work with the Swedish conglomerate along the identified cooperation points in the field of extended reality (XR) technologies, said Minister of Defense Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky.
The agreement signed between the HM and SAAB in March will lead to the creation of a center of excellence in artificial intelligence, they stressed.
They added that the Swedish side will also participate, among other activities, in the development of the Hungarian Air Force’s fighter jet capability and the virtual training needs of the operational capabilities supporting it. In this context, the Hungarian side will launch a pilot project for maintenance training supported by artificial intelligence at the center coordinated by VIKI.
FactDuring the visit of the Swedish Prime Minister to Hungary in February 2024, defense cooperation took center stage. Talks emphasized the need to strengthen Hungarian defense capabilities, with negotiations indicating a firm commitment to bolstering national security. PM Viktor Orbán announced plans to enhance the air defense fleet with the acquisition of four additional Gripen aircraft, building upon previous efforts. Agreements were also made to extend logistics contracts to include training and to establish a research and development center focused on artificial intelligence. Parliament was set to convene to discuss key decisions arising from the discussions with Sweden.
