What does it mean to cultivate a legacy? At Africatown Community Land Trust (ACLT), this question has guided our mission since our establishment in 2016. It is rooted in the history, struggles, and triumphs of Seattle’s Black community. For us, cultivating a legacy means building more than a foundation—it’s about creating spaces where equity, ownership, and opportunity are not just ideas but everyday realities. Cultivating a legacy means honoring the rich stories and contributions of our community while laying the groundwork filled with the promise of a better, more sustainable future. It’s the reason behind spaces like Africatown Plaza, which centers Black families and and individuals. It’s the driving force of programs at the William Grose Center, fostering education, technology, and entrepreneurship. And it’s the heart of the work we do at Benu Community Home, offering not just shelter but dignity and hope for men rebuilding their lives. As we look ahead to a bold vision, we see a future where Seattle’s Black community is thriving and integral to the city’s success. But to make that future a reality, we need your help. This year’s End-of-Year Campaign - Cultivating Legacy, Together - aims to raise $500,000 to sustain and grow ACLT’s transformative projects and create even more opportunities for our communities Your contribution fuels progress hat sustains and enables growth. It ensures spaces like Africatown Plaza continue to thrive, expands programming at the William Grose Center, and supports culturally responsive services at Benu Community Home. It invests in a more inclusive Seattle where everyone benefits from the strength and vibrancy of a thriving Black community. Join us in cultivating a legacy that transforms lives and builds a brighter future for generations to come. February is Black History Month to celebrate the African American community's rich culture, resilience, and contributions. As a passionate advocate for nonprofit work, I believe it is essential to acknowledge the significant impact of Black philanthropy and African American nonprofits. Black philanthropy encompasses a wide range of giving beyond just financial donations. It is about empowering communities, advocating for equality, and driving social change. From grassroots organizations addressing systemic issues to established nonprofits supporting education, healthcare, arts, and more, African American nonprofits are making a lasting difference in the lives of many. We must recognize and support the important work being done by these organizations. Amplifying their voices can help them gain the resources and recognition needed to continue their critical efforts. Additionally, we can challenge existing narratives about philanthropy, demonstrating that anyone - regardless of wealth or status - can be a philanthropist by dedicating their time, skills, and resources to impactful causes. At this juncture, I want to express my admiration and gratitude to all the Black philanthropists, nonprofit leaders, and volunteers who tirelessly work towards creating a more equitable society. Your dedication serves as an inspiration to us all, reminding us of the immense power we have when we come together for a common good cause. If you are passionate about supporting Black philanthropy and African American nonprofits, I encourage you not only to celebrate their achievements during Black History Month but also to?make a long-term commitment to their causes. Consider volunteering your time, sharing their stories on social media, or making a financial contribution if possible. Furthermore, let's amplify the voices of Black leaders and organizations throughout the year, not just in February. By continuously highlighting their work, we can increase awareness and support for their causes, ultimately contributing to a more equitable and inclusive society. As an individual or business, you can also explore partnerships with Black-led nonprofits, engage in mentorship opportunities, or provide resources and expertise. Together, we can foster collaboration and create meaningful change in the communities we serve. During this Black History Month, I urge you to reflect on the power of philanthropy and the invaluable contributions of Black philanthropists and African American nonprofits. Let's continue to honor their legacies, celebrate their achievements, and work together to build a more just and inclusive future for all. #blackhistorymonth #africanamericannonprofits #nonprofits #blackphila

At Urban Nonprofit, we recognize the unique contributions of Black philanthropy and African American nonprofits. We are dedicated to shedding light on their work and offering valuable resources, information, and a sense of community to all those interested. Black philanthropy goes beyond monetary donations; it is about investing in communities and uplifting those who have historically been marginalized. You've heard us say it before, but we'll say it again: We Are Better Together! In honor of Black Philanthropy Month (BPM) this month, our friends at @SHARE Charlotte (with the help of the folks at Barre Belle) put together some fast facts on the need for giving back to our Black-led and Black-benefitting (BLBB) grassroots organizations. Did You Know? Historically only 1% of community foundation funding is spent on Black-led, Black-benefitting organizations 76% of these nonprofits operate with less $500K in annual revenue and a third operate on $30K per year 92% of BLBB nonprofit leaders have lived experience 43% operate without full time paid staff 86% have trouble accessing large funders We hope you'll read and share this guide to see how easily you can support the work of these nonprofits and their impact in our community: Read it here: https://lnkd.in/eNxyf2Bb

Rosilyn Temple, Founder & Program Director of KC Mothers in Charge, sheds light on the harsh reality faced by Black-led nonprofits in securing funding. Despite the critical role they play in community safety and support, these organizations often find themselves "overlooked by so many big grantees and federal funding", says Rosilyn. "That's a big thing that really hurts small Black-led [run] organizations." KC Mothers in Charge is a Nonprofit Catalyst Grantee that serves as a beacon of hope for those affected by the tragedy of homicide. Rosilyn Temple founded the Kansas City chapter of Mothers in Charge in 2014, after losing her son PeeWee to homicide in 2011. "As a Black woman, people tell you that you're not going to make it. Well here I stand going on 11 years as an organization in this community." Today, KC Mothers In Charge operates as a team of four and continues their work to reduce violent crime through prevention, education and intervention. United Way is proud to support their mission. We met with five Black nonprofit leaders for a conversation centered around these challenges, with a specific focus on the ongoing struggle for adequate funding. Stay tuned as we share more stories. Must read report from Giving Gap and Heather Infantry on the state of black-founded nonprofits today. * Black leaders reported being deeply involved in their organization's daily operations. * Black leaders have personal experience related to their nonprofit's mission, fueling their commitment toward the organization's causes. * Founder's primary motivation for their work is passion and belief in the mission, followed by lived experience. * Passion and commitment don't pay the bills, many Black leaders need to supplement their nonprofit income with additional jobs due to financial constraints. *The top need identified is financial support for general operations. These reasons and others are why our San Jose Giving Circle has focused on the BIPOC-led proximate organizations in our neighborhoods. We have funded some extraordinary black-led nonprofits (fiscally sponsored projects) which face the challenges outlined above. These organizations include Parenting with a Purpose, Muindi Foundation, and PARTI Program founded by Colette Choates, Nyla Choates, Winston Ashby, Serena M., and Tim Muindi. Today is the last day of Black History Month, but these organizations deserve recognition and support everyday of the year! https://lnkd.in/gEGzB5jM

Data is key. Thank you to the Giving Gap for sharing this report today. I am sharing because it is that important to communicate and comprehend! See key finding below but please download the report also because there is so much you need to know! -Despite their unwavering commitment to addressing our country's greatest social challenges, Black leaders and their organizations are forced to navigate a funding ecosystem that unfairly advantages their white counterparts and restricts their own capacity for growth. -Passion and commitment don't pay the bills Despite their dedication, many leaders need to supplement their nonprofit income with additional jobs due to financial constraints (62%). -Black nonprofits need to keep the lights on The top need identified by these organizations is financial support for general operations (97%), highlighting the importance of grants and contributions. -Money is key, but it isn't everything Success is not solely attributed to financial support. Leaders highlighted their strong skill sets, spiritual practices, and support networks as crucial factors. #BackBlack #Blacknonprofits #collectivegiving #collectivepower
