?? A Musical Collaboration for a Cause ?? We are deeply honoured to be the beneficiaries of an incredible musical collaboration by some of Limerick’s most talented artists, who came together to record a stunning cover of the Cranberries' Animal Instinct. This project is a heartfelt tribute timed for the 7th anniversary of the passing of the extraordinary Dolores O'Riordan. This music video, the result of months of dedication, features our amazing volunteers from The Haven Hub and Limerick Suicide Watch, alongside staff from local businesses, cherished members of the community, and well-known Limerick personalities. It beautifully reflects one of our core values: #UnityInTheCommunity. The release also marks the beginning of a vital fundraising campaign to ensure the doors of our Thomondgate centre can open this February, a month when mental health support is needed most. We extend our deepest gratitude to the phenomenal Emma Langford, whose passion and determination made this collaboration possible, Shane Serrano for his outstanding cinematography, and the unwavering support of Limerick City & County Council. ?? Support our mission by texting HAVEN to 50300 ?? Texts cost €4, with Haven Hub CLG receiving a minimum of €3.40. ? Together, we can make a difference. Just finished my first year as a full time faculty member and the Director of a #musicaltheatre and #theatre program. Here are my end of the year thoughts ?? ??Our choices should always be student centered. ??Hold true to your boundaries. ??Teaching somehow ends up at the bottom of the priority list (amongst admin duties). ??Students want and need structure. ??Expectations should always be made clear from the start. ??You won’t be friends with everyone. ??Culture shock is a real thing. ??It’s okay to be frustrated. ??Have a solution based mentality. ??Change takes time. ??Hidden curriculum is real. ??Pedagogy should be a requirement for all teachers/professors. ??Teaching doesn’t mean talking. ??Just because it’s “how you’ve always done it,” doesn’t mean there isn’t a better or more efficient way. ??A supportive Dean makes all the difference. ??Curriculum needs to and should be re-evaluated. ??Ask for help/advice from people you trust. ??Stay active and up to date within your industry. ??I’m grateful to have a job! What would your advice be from a #universityprofessor or in #highereducation ?

Impress vs Impact Post Teacher's Day in Jamaica is long passed. I thought long and hard if I should post as I questioned why I would post if I did. I needed to assure myself that my sharing was not about impressing but more so impacting. This is one of the messages I received on teacher's day and I've been emotional and pensive since. I remember her journey clearly; I remember how I felt when I saw the assignments; I remember her looks of disappointments; I remember her efforts, I remember how I felt when I sat to examine her teaching episodes in her final moments; I recall now how I feel each time I see her in action in her professional sojourn, and that seldom warm feeling always fills me up. I'm not the most patient teacher. I will 'cuss' you out badly, and give Yuh nuff 'big licks' if I know you have potential and you're playing the fool. I don't play and I'm usually hated and respected for it. I have also realised I don't think I love teaching but find I am excellent at it and through my creative methods I have always impacted even one. I've tried to leave the profession many times but I'm still here. So I allow God to order my steps. Some days I wonder and question, why do I even bother. And then I get messages like these and the question is answered....if I touched even just ONE, I would have accomplished the purpose paid out before me. I hope this post impacts someone positively. #teaching #artseducator #theatre. #director #DorraineReid #impactinglives #education #purpose

Unlocking the Role of Conservatorships: Brian Wilson's Journey In the journey of life, certain events remind us of the importance of planning for the future, especially when it comes to protecting our loved ones and ourselves. The recent news about Brian Wilson, the co-founder of the Beach Boys, is one such event that brings to light the critical role of conservatorships in estate planning. Brian Wilson’s legacy as a musical genius is undeniable. Yet, his personal life now faces significant challenges due to his health condition. Wilson’s family filed for conservatorship to ensure his needs could be adequately met upon the loss of his wife. This step was necessary in managing his affairs and highlighting the unforeseen challenges that can arise as we age. Life’s unpredictability calls for preparedness and the story of Brian Wilson serves as a powerful reminder of this truth. As we reflect on his contributions to music and culture, let’s also consider the importance of planning for our future and that of our loved ones. A very insightful article. The term Indigenous can be used by pretenindians without having connections to communities, place and land, which are the basis of our identity! We must consider these issues among First Nations here in Australia.
Professor and Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Peoples, Technoscience, and Society at University of Alberta, Faculty of Native Studies
A colleague just sent this to me. This problem is so intractable because the Indian (or Métis) is absorbable within the settler state's historical mythology. The settler state and most of their citizens truly believe they have a right to every thing here. How many settler state citizens really question the nation state's right to all that it occupies? Trying to stand in for us on stolen land is just one more thing. As always, their lies ease their conscience and build the nation state's future. This article references the special issue of Genealogy that Gordon Henry and I are co-editing right now. I'll put the links in a comment. "Lauzon’s claims about her father’s Indigenous identity are contradicted by genealogical, baptismal, and census records obtained by The Walrus, which show only French Canadian ancestry on her father’s side, going back five generations. When asked to explain this discrepancy and others, Lauzon replied that her father had told her that his mother was partly Indigenous, while admitting that her grandmother “did not share this view.”

???? LinkedIn community. I have been off this platform for about a month to complete this #book, which will be published later this year. It represents 15 years in archives, 4 research assistants, over 100,000 in funding, and an innumerable number of hours of my life. It is the first full length book to tell this story and this story isn't about one thing, but everything from #race to #racism, #colonialism and #nationalism, #music and #theatre, #dance and #singers, #national #culture and #local #culture. There is something in here for everyone interested in understanding the roots of race as #commodity and how anti-Blackness was at the core of Canada’s formation. Black people have been both loved and feared and blackface is the vehicle I have chosen to explain this historical #dynamic. Stay tuned for pre-order information. #book #newbook #Canada #blackfaceAtlantic #DrCheryl #historyrevealed #culturalcriticism #radicalthought #WLP #Canadianauthor #publishing #essentialread #preorder #comingsoon #uncompromising #instantclassic #dedication #radicalwriting #performance #persistence #determined #trailblazed
