Thanks Lizz! Every session about AI, an important emerging tool for our sector and one we need to take advantage of and do right!
Julie Wirtanen, CFRE and I were thrilled to see so many friends and colleagues, and to meet so many more, at the Association of Fundraising Professionals Colorado Chapter's Rocky Mountain Philanthropy Institute. The theme of "AI Doing this Right?" was timely and there were great sessions and conversations throughout the day. Congratulations to my fellow board members Chelley Canales, Carolyn Stevens-Wood, and the entire conference committee. And thank you to our terrific speakers and fellow sponsors. Carter, Advancing Philanthropy Worldwide was proud to play a part!

As July comes to a wrap, I want to express my deepest appreciation to all who made our conversation earlier this month possible at the Forum Conference in St. Louis! Nancy Sanabria (she/her) and Laura Smith for your trust, camaraderie, and candor; David Maurrasse for sharing your wisdom across the years; and Traci Slater-Rigaud and the United Philanthropy Forum community for the invitation and opportunity. And always grateful for Philanthropy New York and my colleagues' support, one of whom reminded me yesterday to share the 3 Rs from my remarks - so below is a summary. Spoiler: Although this panel is entitled "Advancing Racial Equity through Cohort Learning," cohort-based learning (CBL) is only one tool we use to support our funder members' journey in advancing more racially equitable practices within philanthropy: More importantly, the work of bringing folks along requires Resourcefulness, Relationship-Building, and Repetition (3 Rs). -- Resourcefulness: In other words, creativity. We use all the tools in our toolbox as philanthropy-mobilizing organizations: peer networks, issue-based working groups, skills-building programs, policy work, CBLs. With these wrap-around strategies, we nurture folks' learning, leadership, and growth in accessing their spheres of influence to effect change. We support their self-directed learning journey towards shifting practices. -- Relationship-building: Invite people in, and invite people to invite people in. Create the conditions for folks to learn, listen, engage, have difficult conversations, to increase trust and depth of relationships over multiple and consistent engagements. So when they're ready to act, they move together. -- Repetition: Regardless of the audience, which room or zoom we're in, what the session topic is, we remain clear and consistent, leading with our values and our commitments in service to a more democratic and just future. Rinse and repeat. We need each other to stay the course. And we need to remind ourselves that this is "forever work," and forever work requires Resourcefulness, Relationship-building, and Repetition - the 3 Rs. And might I add a fourth in this writing? Rest.
Catch me at #ForumCon24 later this week - so honored to be in community with my learning peers sharing our experiences advancing racial equity with our members! w/Nancy Sanabria (she/her) from Philanthropy Northwest, Laura Smith from Philanthropy Ohio, David Maurrasse from Marga Incorporated, United Philanthropy Forum, and Philanthropy New York https://lnkd.in/eQg_QUHA

Boldly Go specializes in helping leanly staffed foundations make an outsized impact. Recently, our team came together to discuss the Exponent Philanthropy's 2024 Foundation Operations and Management Report, to gain insight into how leanly staffed foundations across the US are approaching grantmaking, governance and impact. Some of the findings that we reflected on were: -Foundations that rated racial equity as somewhat or very relevant to their mission were also more likely to be catalytic philanthropists (those that embrace changemaking approaches beyond grantmaking). -Only 14% of foundations that assessed their impact shared those learnings externally. -The percentage of foundations giving general operating and multi year grants has barely budged between 2018 to 2022. However, the percentage of foundations' total grantmaking budgets allocated for general operating grants grew significantly from 44% to 52%. This research helps support our ability to spread best practices to our clients so that they can make a greater impact on their communities and on the issues that matter most to people and the planet. The Future of Philanthropy is Young! Jeremiah Steen once told me that this is the best world to take risks, to test out new hypotheses for the world's potential, and give that first push to someone's career. How can we do any less than to fully empower young people in every asset of this field? For Elders in the Non-Profit Sector, how are you held accountable by those under 25 within the communities you serve? Are we on your boards? Have we reviewed and approved of the language you use to describe us in your grants? Most importantly, what are you doing to build the trust required to build a world that will honor your legacy?
Co-Founder of Critical Youth Theory | Philanthropic Practitioner | Resource Mobilizer | Advocate for Sustainable Pathways to Aspirations | Youth-lead Philanthropy is the Future
The Steen Foundation proudly nominated Jelani Stowers, VP of Narrative & Research, who, while accepting his award, announced a commitment to provide a $1,000 cash prize indefinitely for the winner of the AFP Greater Detroit Chapter’s Sparky Anderson Youth in Philanthropy Award, at the National Philanthropy Day Awards Ceremony and Strolling Dinner 2024.
