I recently had a piece published in FP Comment (Financial Post) on the topic of why Indigenous housing needs private capital. Indigenous communities have traditionally had only one option for securing housing funds: the federal government. This limitation has prompted certain bands to develop their own financial strategies. Unlike banks who continue to operate by outdated lending policies with little movement on updating them, private lenders have the freedom to think innovatively and swiftly. Considerable untapped resources exist within both the private sector and Indigenous communities, presenting opportunities for improving housing conditions. The current system of funding for Indigenous housing is inadequate and needs reform.
