In the Fall 2023 academic term, CU Book Store, under the direction of Jessica Carlsen and Matt Avena, and in partnership with RedShelf, launched a revolutionary first-day course materials access program known to the industry as Cascading Access. In late March, Cascading Access was recognized by EdTech Digest as a 2024 Trendsetter Award Finalist. Known as CU Book Access on the University of Colorado Boulder campus, it is the first program to combine Equitable Access and Inclusive Access to give students complete control over their course materials program. It is designed to maximize affordability, convenience, and flexibility. With 96% of students participating, Cascading Access achieved the highest rate of any course materials delivery program in its first term. “Working with a forward-thinking partner like CU Book Store allowed RedShelf to develop technology that will also benefit students at schools nationwide,” said RedShelf CEO Rob Holland. “That’s why Cascading Access is now an integral part of our platform.” RedShelf’s Cascading Access technology is set to revolutionize course materials access as institutions recognize the value of offering maximum affordability and convenience to students on their own terms. Too often, #gatewaycourses prevent #students from establishing that foundation for future #learning. #Culturallyrelevant #teachingpractices and materials can create the #senseofbelonging that helps #learners overcome difficulties they face in these courses. #Faculty who teach gateway courses are often engaged by the idea of using #culturallyrelevantmaterials to support #studentsuccess, but they may need direction to make that transition. A new report, Infusing #CulturallyRelevantContent in Gateway Courses in #PostsecondaryEducation: Findings and Insights from #CollegeFaculty, from CORA Learning and the Community College Equity Assessment Lab (CCEALab) at San Diego State University, shows that, while instructors endeavor to use high-impact #teachingmaterials and practices in their gateway courses, they often face barriers to incorporating culturally relevant approaches. Over the years, Portraits of a Graduate have received growing attention, yet many school districts face challenges in operationalizing them systematically. An ongoing research initiative with Indiana University found that the use of Top Hat by instructors resulted in an 11.5% decrease in the mean student withdrawal rate. The finding highlights the positive impact of Top Hat’s student engagement platform on retention, particularly in introductory courses that have higher dropout rates. As Top Hat’s CEO, Maggie Leen notes, “Studies consistently demonstrate that withdrawing from first-year courses can greatly reduce a student's likelihood of completing a college degree. These findings reinforce the importance of providing faculty with tools to support effective teaching methods like active learning and frequent assessments, and how this leads to stronger student engagement and higher persistence.” Read the full press release: https://toph.at/iu-study

NASH is continuing to build systems’ capacity to use improvement science to address stubborn obstacles to college access and completion, and the positive impact of the Course Flexibility NIC is becoming evident. This initiative, known as "course sharing" or cross-registration, enables students to take courses at different institutions within their system without formally transferring. This approach reduces time-to-degree, facilitates on-time graduation, and minimizes student debt. By participating in NASH’s course sharing NIC, systems have expanded access to high-demand classes, reducing the need for students to transfer, switch majors, or extend their studies.
