Our member surveys also show that the community offered at meetings is a top reason they attend. The American Medical Association recommends that physicians reflect on things that they are grateful for to improve mindfulness and practice gratitude. “What we know about gratitude is it’s a gift that you can give yourself,” says Mark Greenawald, MD. I invite you to think about the ways you offer yourself time and space to release and see below for some ideas on creating a release ritual, fostering connection, and balancing boundaries. ?? Create a Release Ritual: After a long shift, it's essential to have a way to release the accumulated stress. This could be something creative like journaling, sketching, or even a voice memo where you reflect on your day. Alternatively, a physical activity such as a shower or a short walk can act as a symbolic cleanse. The key is to find a routine that allows you to let go of the day's emotional weight, leaving you open and refreshed. ?? Foster Meaningful Connections: Often, we believe we need to desensitize ourselves to survive the daily grind. While healthy boundaries are necessary, cutting off emotions can backfire, making it difficult to reconnect with loved ones when we get home. Instead, find someone you trust—whether a colleague or a friend—to share your experiences. This human connection can be a powerful tool in processing emotions and maintaining compassion. ? Balance Your Boundaries: Setting boundaries is crucial, but they need to be flexible enough to adapt to different situations. Too rigid, and you risk isolating yourself; too loose, and you may become overwhelmed. Evaluate what you're saying "yes" to at work and at home. Are these commitments adding to your exhaustion or making you feel more alive and loved? Consider what you can adjust or delegate to protect your energy and preserve your compassion. ??
