I had the privilege of attending the Carnegie Initiative Summit on January 30th, where the "Building Effective Networks and Navigating Relationships" workshop, presented by Canadian Tire Corporation, took place. The panelists, comprising Ashley Collins @Curran, @Bobby Sahni, Lindsay Pennal, Marsha-Gaye Knight BSc, PDip, MSc. Knight BSc, PDip, MSc. @Brett Peterson, along with the host Biju Pappachan, delivered an outstanding session on building strategic relationships and navigating the intricate landscape of networking. I extend my gratitude to them for providing us with such a remarkable learning experience.
The Carnegie Initiative endeavors to transform the realm of hockey into a more inclusive, supportive, and inviting environment. The Summit was established to offer a secure platform for panelists and thought leaders to engage in meaningful and informative discussions about the challenges, advancements, and practical insights concerning hockey culture. I am deeply grateful for the wealth of experiences shared by the panel.
I would like to mention some key points from the Summit:
A significant insight I gained from this panel discussion was the emphasis on multiculturalism by Bobby Sahni. Residing in a diverse city like Toronto, it's crucial to recognize that the methods of connecting and establishing networks vary across cultures. To maximize the benefits of our networking endeavors, it's essential to have a mutual understanding of how different cultures engage. As a Sport and Event Marketing student at George Brown, I plan to leverage this knowledge to enhance my social capital and launch my career in the industry effectively.
Also, I was impressed with the way in which Biju Pappachan elaborated the significance of dedicating time to individuals to cultivate stronger networks. Despite the prevalence of advanced technology, it's crucial to avoid approaching relationship-building purely mechanically. Adding a personal message when connecting on social media can enhance the meaningfulness of the connection and nurture authentic relationships.
Ms Lindsay Pennal beautifully illustrated how embracing a different approach can lead to the development of stronger relationships. Furthermore, Brett Peterson emphasized the importance of listening skills by drawing from his valuable experience as a general manager. Patiently listening is essential for comprehending the thought processes of team members.
Thank you once again for organizing such an enlightening event. There's truly nothing like learning from experts in the field. I eagerly anticipate putting these valuable lessons into practice in both my personal and professional life.
