As September unfolds, we’re reminded that this month is more than just a time to mark on the calendar—it’s an opportunity to deepen our commitment to mental health and suicide prevention.?AET recognizes that every individual deserves compassion, support, and understanding. Suicide prevention starts with awareness, open conversations, and a culture where mental health is prioritized. Why Awareness Matters: Suicide is a complex and deeply personal issue that can affect anyone, regardless of background or circumstances. Raising awareness is key to understanding the signs of distress, reducing stigma, and promoting early intervention. By increasing our knowledge and empathy, we can collectively work towards a world where mental health is openly discussed and supported. Understanding the Impact- Mental Health Challenges: Many individuals experiencing mental health struggles may not openly share their difficulties. It’s essential to recognize that mental health issues are prevalent and can impact anyone. Signs of Distress: Awareness of the signs of emotional distress—such as changes in behavior, withdrawal from social interactions, or expressions of hopelessness—can be crucial in providing timely support. Support Systems: Understanding the available support systems and resources is vital. Knowing where to turn for help, whether it’s a mental health professional, a crisis hotline, or community support groups, can make a significant difference. The Power of Compassion: Supporting someone through a mental health crisis involves listening without judgment, offering empathy, and encouraging them to seek professional help if needed. Compassion and understanding can go a long way in making individuals feel valued and less isolated. As we mark Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, let’s commit to deepening our understanding of mental health and supporting one another. By doing so, we contribute to a more compassionate and informed community where everyone feels empowered to seek help and support. We invite everyone in our network to join us in this important cause. Let’s work together to raise awareness, break down barriers, and offer support to those in need. If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out for help—no one has to face this alone. #SuicidePreventionMonth #MentalHealthAwareness #SupportEachOther #BreakTheStigma #WellbeingAtWork #AETFederal?

After Maya left, I began learning more about suicide and suicide prevention, and I learned a lot about risk factors and protective factors through this resource. This was eye opening to me and I encourage everyone to take a look. It might help you better assess your own mental health, and it will give you greater awareness of the signs that someone might be at risk. Given that Maya and I grew up together, it shouldn’t be a surprise to me that we shared some of the same risk factors – especially the historical ones, and some of the environmental ones like prolonged stress and stressful live events. This resource also highlights the PROTECTIVE FACTORS, and I don’t think we spend enough time talking about those. They are: ?? Access to mental health care, and being proactive about mental health ?? Feeling connected to family and community support ?? Problem-solving and coping skills ?? Limited access to lethal means ?? Cultural and religious beliefs that encourage connecting and help-seeking, discourage suicidal behavior, or create a strong sense of purpose or self-esteem I’m grateful that a lot of these protective factors are in place for me, and have been for quite some time. Maybe that was the difference in our paths; we’ll never know. But I do know that mental health care, connection, learning skills to navigate life’s challenges, and being in environments that promote the seeking of help and build up people’s self-esteem are at least part of the solution, and part of the way to help prevent suicide. https://lnkd.in/egkRWdYx American Foundation for Suicide Prevention American Foundation for Suicide Prevention - Virginia Chapter #SuicidePrevention #MentalHealth #TeamMaya

**World Suicide Prevention Day Post: A Reflection on John Menlove Edwards** On World Suicide Prevention Day, we remember the lives lost to suicide and the importance of supporting mental health. Today, we reflect on the story of John Menlove Edwards, a brilliant climber, psychologist, and poet who, despite his achievements, struggled deeply with mental illness. John Menlove Edwards was a pioneering figure in British rock climbing during the 1930s. His contributions to the sport, through routes he established and his psychological insight into the mind of a climber, remain legendary. However, behind his remarkable public persona, Edwards battled severe depression and repressed personal struggles, living in a time when there was little understanding or acceptance of mental health issues, especially for men. His story is a reminder that mental illness can affect anyone, regardless of their achievements, strengths, or external image. Edwards tragically took his own life in 1958, leaving behind a legacy that challenges us to break the silence around mental health and offer support to those who may be suffering in silence. On this World Suicide Prevention Day, let us honor Edwards' memory by fostering environments where open conversations about mental health are encouraged. Check in on your loved ones, offer support, and reach out if you need help. You are not alone, and there is always hope. **If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out to a suicide prevention helpline in your area.** #WorldSuicidePreventionDay #MentalHealthMatters #BreakTheSilence #SupportEachOther #JohnMenloveEdwards #YouAreNotAlone #mountaineering #mentalhealth #climbing #climber
