Our approach to this project proposed to maximize the potential of the site, taking the full width of the plot available. Each house being 7.10 m wide. The proposal generates a set of platforms either side of the stair void. Each platform is asigned one programmatic activity, always respecting the premise of maximum fa?ade width. This strategy allows for the rooms of this house to enjoy of unusually wide spaces. These spaces can be bedrooms, studios, drawing rooms, libraries, games rooms, all of them enjoying of unusually wide spaces for an urban townhouse project. Only one room on each side of the staircase on each floor. Glancy Nicholls Architects has proudly brought its expertise in restoration and retrofit design to visualise the sustainable future of two of Derby city centre’s most notable historic structures. ? “From the outset, the overarching brief from Wavensmere Homes was for a huge emphasis to be placed on exemplary placemaking. By having a mix of commercial uses within the two buildings – and opening the inaccessible site up to create a series of new linear parks – hundreds of people will be able to appreciate these heritage assets on a daily basis. ? “The designs for the 227 two- and three-bedroom townhouses that will surround the two listed buildings are bespoke. Curved and terraced street scenes will celebrate the beauty and vista of the Bonded Warehouse, while incorporating a range of energy saving technologies and strategies. "A four-storey apartment building containing 49 apartments will also reinstate the lost streetscape of the Stafford Street frontage. It seems that article after article indicating that homes that survived LA fires have several things in common that saved them: none combustible materials, no eaves, none ventilated attics, heat resistant roofing assembly, no foundation planting/landscaping. There are other factors as well, such as concrete walls around perimeter that prevented fire spreading along the fence line (unlike the wood fencing). There are no “junk”, trash cans or vehicles parked by the houses. We know the fires will affect building codes in the future and that is perhaps what’s needed, but will that affect HOA’s as well…

A Big Win for a Challenging Project – Securing Listed Building Consent at Locksbrook Cemetery Lodge We’re delighted to share that we successfully designed and secured planning and listed building consent yesterday for a loft conversion at Locksbrook Cemetery Lodge, a Grade II listed building in Bath. This was no ordinary project—working within such a sensitive heritage setting required a multidisciplinary approach. Through innovative engineering solutions, architectural history expertise, and clever design, we demonstrated that the proposal would have minimal impact on the building’s historic fabric while unlocking its potential. Accurate surveys were crucial in understanding the constraints and opportunities, allowing us to craft a sympathetic yet practical solution. The result? A carefully considered design that respects the heritage significance of the lodge while meeting modern needs. The Highland Council recently confirmed the Section 75 Agreement for new homes in Conon Bridge, allowing Tulloch Homes to proceed with their approved plans to deliver 160 private and affordable homes in the area. As the project architects, Bracewell Stirling Consulting has been integral to the design and planning process, working as part of a team with engineers, transport consultants, ecologists, and landscape architects. We held consultation events with the public as part of the planning process and consulted with the Highland Council pre-planning. This early-stage engagement helped streamline the application through the planning process. We were the design architects for the site layout, which has been planned to be sympathetic to the existing landform, providing attractive landscaped open spaces and active travel connections with adjacent routes, amenities, and the wider Braes of Conon residential areas. The buildings and layout are designed with consideration for reducing energy use. We are experts in advising clients on cost-effective sustainable design solutions, and all houses in this development will be fitted with air source heat pumps.
